eBay ... Neptune Trident

I was checking eBay just to see what folks had listed. I wad shocked when I saw there were 26 bids on a Neptune Trident, bringing the cost up to $1200! And, there was more than one that had bids going that high. One person listed there’s for $3000!

I guess I should be happy for the folks that can get that kind of money for those things. But.... holy cow.... really?

Nope! It’s been out for a few weeks. I have one. Limited release; they’re sending units to retailers as they’re produced.

Helps with providing customer support on a new (complex) product too.

Got it. So 1200 on something that is not the final product.
I guess I get it. But can buy other fun things with 1200$

No you misunderstand. It is the final product. But they can only make X per month, so it’s out of stock at most retailers. I got mine at saltwateraquarium.

What's that saying, fool and his money are easily parted?

I get that someone has to have all the latest and greatest gadgets right away, but to pay 3X MSRP is just foolish. Comes down to supply & demand, but it will never make sense to me. Reminds me of all the GPU prices, where miners were paying 2-3X MSRP as well. Difference being is that they would earn that money back, which isnt the case with Trident.

Plus Neptune has stated that units sold on ebay are considered 'used' and the warranty is void.

People pay hundreds, if not a thousand, for a mushroom that looks like it has yellow bubble algae on it...

Paying 2-4x for a gadget seems par for the course for early adopters.

How would neptune know it was sold on ebay? From what i understand warranty starts as soon as you registered. I might be confused.

Not confused- you’re correct as far as I know. But saying that is a good way to try to discourage people from buying new units on ebay. If I buy a trident, then gift it to my cousin, the warranty and customer support is the same as if my cousin bought it. The same logic should apply. I actually believe it may be illegal to do otherwise- to not provide support to a brand new item, which has only been used by 1 person.

I am not aware there is any law that requires a warranty to be transferable beyond the original owner. Further, it is easy enough, based on serial number to know where a particular item was bought and by whom. When I have had issues with my Kessil lights, for example, they know based on their serial number, which retailer sold it and ask me to tell them - they don't require the actual receipt though . I am simply relaying what I heard from Neptune on their FAQ for anyone who might be foolish enough to buy one off ebay for a scalpers premium. Perhaps Neptune would not enforce this for a brand new, flipped unit - but if one is considering buying one that way, get the original receipt as well. FWIW, this approach was common in the electronics industry as a way to discourage grey market resellers.

So if I buy my friend a trident as a present, including the receipt, they can’t get warranty? I don’t think that is how it works.... an item’s warranty is activated when registered with a serial number and identifying information,

When I bought my trident online, for example, I did not provide any identifying information that would be “permanently linked” to the serial number. I could send it to my friend, etc.

Sigh …. if you got something as a gift you'd have access to the original receipt wouldn't you. I'm simply relaying what I heard stated - thought I made that point. If you feel aggrieved, suggest you debate it with them.

I think there are many ways around this, including asking whomever sells you something for the original receipt (I always do this on those rare occasions I buy something that has remaining warranty) and not volunteering that you are not the original owner (never good to offer this kind of information). If Neptune is going to take this view on flipped units, seems to me folks ought to be aware and act accordingly. Of course, I'm one of those people that never gets around to sending in the warranty cards LOL.
