Hey everyone has anybody ever tried the RODI systems sold on ebay? I found a seller that's sells 100gpd 5 stage systems for $100.00. Feedback rating very high with over 375 units sold. Should I go ahead and make the purchase ?

Those are very low end deinking water systems and do not compare to the Spectraure which is only $130. First off the sediment filter is very coarse at 5 microns nominal rated, the Spectrapure uses 1 micron absolute rated. The carbons are good for about 3000 to 6000 total gallons so say 600 to 1200 treated gallons at best at the normal 4:1 waste ratio but really less since the coarse sediment filter does little to protect the tiny pores where the chlorine is adsorbed. If they use the Dow Filmtec 100 GPD membrane this is the worst possible choice for a RO/DI since they are only 90% efficient versus 96-98% for their 75 and as high as 99% for Spectrapure treated and tested membranes. The DI is a little horizontal throw away with maybe 9-12 oz of outdated resin bobbing around versus a fulls size clear vertical DI filled with 20 oz of custom blended fresh DI, usually blended and packed the day it ships from Tempe AZ. The ebay will have a fixed supposedly one size fits all flow restrictor which is never spot o versus a capilllary tube flow restrictor you yourself adjust to fit your exact water conditions. Big differences that will end up costing much more in the long run with the ebay system, you really do get what you pay for with RO/DI so shop wisely.

I use one of their units (a portable one), and am pretty satisfied. 0 tds for up to a year on the stock filters. Replacement filters are easy to replace and affordable. Been a customer of theirs for a few years now.

Not sure how much I waste, I only make about 20 gals a month. Good enough for my sps as top off water.

Hey Rat, I've checked out the Spectrapure system, and it will probably be the one I pull the trigger on. But, I'm left with the question: if it's such a great system, why are there so many refurb units?

Myself, I think they are new. They had a large vendor who went out of business and they got a bunch back which they freshed up and sold as refurbished but had such a good response they have extended it. Just my thoughts, not sure how accurate it is. Volume sales, a thousand units at $25 profit is the same as 250 usits at $100 profit and it gets more systems out in the hobbyisys hands so more word of mouth and more replacement filters every 6 months. Again just my opinion.

Good enough for me. I've seen the brand mentioned a lot here and no one has complained about having to send it back, so you're probably right.

My "refurb" had some scrathces on it and because of that they say they can't sell them as "new". So instead they call them a "refurb" and you save money. I'll take some scratches and save $70 off a "new" one. LOL
