Has anyone ever smashed one of those Eco Bio Stones they sell in Petco and used it as rubble for a refugium? Is there any cons to doing this?

Looks kind of like marinepure.

Assuming that it’s not made out of something that leeches aluminum like Marinepure has in many anecdotal instances, it should be perfectly fine, perhaps even well-suited for this purpose.

That being said, it’s quite expensive compared to dry rubble reef rock.

Bricks from your local hardware store are supposedly quite porous. (ref this thread started by @Paul B a few months ago).

If he is right and you wanted the most cost-effective porous rock, i’d go with smashed new bricks that have been sitting in flowing water for a few days.

The thing is I already had an eco bio stone from my old tank so I decided to smash it and use that instead of buying more rubble lol.

Aha. I would definitely use it then.
