These battery backups are over priced to begin with but they do serve a purpose. I have seen the videos on replacing the batteries in the Ecotechs and also the ones on how to build your own. I decided to just order a new one because building my own with the parts I wanted to use was going to be around $120 and used ones go for around $100 with me still needing to replace the battery. I found a new one that cost in the mid $150 range shipped with no tax. I figure why not. I will register it with ecotech and have a warranty. I ordered it on Jan 6, 2020. The battery shows up yesterday on Jan 9. The problem I have with it is the mfg date (sticker) reads Oct 5 2018. To me I am already paying a premium for this battery and I shouldn't be receiving one that is 15 months old before I even use it. Shelf life matters when it comes to these battery backups. If you read the reviews on BRS you will see some disappointing battery life from some users. I contacted the company I purchased it from and he said his last 2 shipments for those were in October and December 2019. That would mean Ecotech shipped him batteries that were already a year old. There was one for sale the other day in the dry goods forum that I missed out on that was used and had saved the guy a couple of times during power outages and the date on his was Dec 15, 2018. Think about that. Already was used for a while and he sold it only because he got a whole home system backup but yet it still had a newer mfg date than my brand new one.

I am already a loser in this deal because to return the battery brand new and unopened I still have to pay shipping and insurance on a heavy hazardous item. So any money I may have saved I lose and then some. I used to always order from BRS until they recently started charging tax in Texas. Now that makes me have to consider ordering from other places that don't charge tax especially when the order is expensive. I just purchased 2 mp40s and the battery backup so tax would have been expensive. Plus the battery backup at BRS was anout $20 more before tax. I don't know. I am just venting I guess but man we spend a lot of money on our eqiupment and really have a right to get what we pay for. I resell equipment from time to time on the dry goods forum when I make a change or just want to upgrade. In this case I wanted to be able to have powerheads that will be able to power on with a backup battery. If I upgrade in the future to a home backup system or some newer product it would be much easier to sell something with a newer date. Usually that is the first question asked when you sell something. I currently run 2 Nero 5's that are fairly new but I have no backup power for. That is the whole reason for me wanted to change. Where I live we lose power 5 to 10 times a year (usually just for a few hours at a time) and I am on the coast and have to deal with the threat of hurricanes.

What are some of your experiences when purchasing these backups? Did any of you receive an older mfg date battery like I did? Should I even care? One thing I learned from this experience is that when you order an item where the age of the item matters then you better call first and not just order it online.

I like that they work right out of the box in terms of being compatible with Vortechs and the runtime but, as you've mentioned, the shelf-life is limited, to the point of absurdity. I'd have to double check on dates, but I had one battery for approximately a year and a half to two years (at the very most). I was leaving for a trip relatively recently when I learned that the battery was dead. I tried to get some information on alternative batteries but I really didn't have the time to spare, so I purchased another Ecotech battery because I was in a pinch. I wasn't pleased with my purchase given my experience with the first battery. Admittedly, I didn't pursue a warranty claim (to the extent I could have) because of my travel plans. Although, EcoTech support and warranty handling is great.

The Ecotech battery backup is just a generic lead acid battery in a very nice housing.

The better way to go about this is to buy a laugher capacity battery for 1/3 the cost, a battery trickle charger ($12?), and the Ecotech wire ($8).

I say use it and if it dies during the warranty then Ecotech will replace it. I had a unit do this vary thing and got a replacement and didn't have to pay shipping or anything.

While my units are under warranty I'll use it. When it's not anymore I'll just swap the batteries.

You can use a Belkin battery backup off of eBay for $20. Buy a new battery $15-$17 plus adapter and you are good to go. The belkin even has a built in battery test.

That is a one year warranty. It is already 15 months old right from the start. The life has most likely been shortened due to sulfation because these type of batteries can't just sit on a shelf longer than 6 to 9 months without a charge or sulfation can start to take place. Lets say it survives the one year warranty period and then dies shortly thereafter. I paid a premium price for a battery I now I have to pay to replace on my own because it sat on a shelf too long somewhere before I bought it. Oct 5, 2018 is too long to sit unused. Will it still work. Probably. Did it lose some life. Very likely.

Buy a UPS power supply and you can run things a lot longer
