Sorry for the cross post.

Looking to add a powerhead to 150G reef tank. Would appreciate any on the MP40 or OctoPulse4

Thanks in advance

I have both an MP40 (QD) and the Octo 4 on an 8 foot long tank. You will see Ecotech gets a lot of love around here but I’ll take the Octo. The MP40 gets a wicked vibration and a buzzing that’s noticeable anywhere near the tank. Less features/settings on the Octo but I’ll take quiet (and less expensive) any day. They both push a lot of water though.

Ecotech are rock solid. That's been my experience since I started the hobby again. I also do not get the vibration that Scottie mentioned, I cant here it at all, and if I touch it you would not know its on! Just remember to use the correct cup/adapter for your width of glass!

Both good pumps. If you have an apex or reeflink the vortech is more flexible and programable. There’s an elegance to the split design, but you pay a premium for it. I’d favor the MP40 but the pulse 4 is a good pump too.

Hello,

To be fair I don’t own either of them, but I have been able to have hands on time with both. They are both good pumps, but at the same quality and a lot less, the octo 4 definitely wins. Name is not everything in today’s world and neither is price. I believe one can spend their money on what ever they feel the urge for. With that said, I think it’s more of an accomplishment when someone builds a fanatic reef, with cheap or cheaper parts than the OMG glitter fashion Ecotech or what ever the last toy is. I think if you link simplicity the octo 4 is much much better.

Thanks for all of your thoughts! Right now, I’m leaning towards the MP40 because I have small fish and an anemone that likes to travel. As much as I like the Pulse4 the MP40 has an anemone guard that just wins the day. I thought about making my own guard but I don’t have those skills. Thanks again for everyone’s thoughts!

I also vote for the mp40, my 2 are completely silent. Reasons I wanted it was control with apex, i could add a backup battery, a spare wetside makes cleaning super easy, low profile in the tank. My only negative is it pulls a vortex and shoots bubbles if you close to the top. I ended up adding these to mine

Wires in tank and no wires in tank. Thats something to consider
