Is it acceptable normal for my ecotech mp40 wetside to separate from the dry side?

I have a MP40 powerhead that's been running for 15 months. I think it is a pure lemon piece of junk, simply not reliable!! I paid $300 New for it! The wetside and dryside will separate from each other often(at least 12 times separating). I clean it. The propeller spins freely. The glass is 6 mm. I am currently running the thinnest spacer on it which is the gasket. I have tried the thin spacer too. I was running the default MP40 run schedule. Now I am operating Reef Crest at 55% 24 hours a day and it still separates.

Ecotech customer service was good, but this product has been awful. I returned it 3 times during the warranty window. First time for a bad power supply. Second time, they replaced the wet side. Third time they replaced the dry side. I think I have given up on the MP40!

.236 inches? It should be fine. I’ve got 2 on my tank with 1/4” glass and the thick spacer with no issues.

First of all, follow the instructions. For 6mm or 1/4" glass, you should be using the THICK gasket as it clearly says on the packages. While using the thinner spacers/gasket may 'seem' like it would hold better, it damages the magnet assemblies. If you have been using just the gasket all along, that may explain the wet and dryside problems. Are you supporting the dryside properly? I see countless installations where it is not supported and can torque off the tank. Also, snails getting into the wetside and stopping the propeller suddenly can also torque them off. I've been using MP40s for many years, and found them to be very reliable.

hmm interesting, I will try the THICK spacer and see what happens over time.

I had the same happened to me before. You need to really get rid of the calcification buildup in the wetside. Use vinegar, and brush the whole thing well, especially the wetside magnet where it is facing the dryside.
