Ecoxotic leds

I saw them at the show in Costa Mesa. I wasnt that impressed. The tank it was over looked very dark and it didnt cover the corners well. That is one of the troubles with LED lights - they dont spred light well at all.

What is the deal anyway with the Orbitec patent? Isnt Orbitec the only company who can sell LED lighting?

I havn't used the Panorama but I do have some of the stunners on my tank and love them. Much better spread than a powerbrite with the same color. I am thinking about getting a panorama module to put on my 12 gallon though....I'll let you know if that goes down and how I like it.

Brightness with LEDs doesn't equate to performance. LEDs are high PAR with relatively low lumen output. That being said, the Panorama strips and fixtures aren't intended to be high light. They are good for a mixed reef with sps up high, and no more than 20-24" tank height. My LFS has a 4 strip Panorama fixture mounted over a 34g Solana about 6" over the water, and I measured PAR at 200 at the surface and 100 at the sand.

As for Orbitec, they are forcing manufacturers to release "dumb" systems that can't dim. They don't hold the monopoly on all LED fixtures, yet.

the reefbrites do have a variable potentiometer on the power supply.

cheers,
ben

They fall outside the patent as they are designed as supplimental lighting, not as primary lighting.

i talked to reefbrite today and got the skinny. their POWER SUPPLY is dimmable, not the leds. if the leds get dimmer as a result of the dimmable power supply, well, so be it. :D

as far as i know if you change a product by 20% it will go around the patent.....with these fixtures it should be easy to do.....

While that is true, the way that patented everything makes it almost impossible to get around it while still using LEDs. Ditch LEDs and you have no problems lol.

What? What mailroom clerk did you talk to? LEDs are dimmable BECAUSE of the power supply/driver. That's the only way to dim them. The patent is for the dimming of an LED or array of LEDs, not the method to dim them.

The only way Reefbrite is getting around the patent is because the are supplimental lights and not enough to technically support marine life (really they can, but they are not being billed that way). From the dimming aspect, there is no way currently around that.

evil what if you made them and marketed them for hydroponics althou they would be really for marine life??? if it was marketed for something else and we just bought them who would know lol...there has to be a way around it!!!! i use led's everyday in signs and they dim, flash etc. there is no way for them to patent it....sorry for taking this thread the wrong way...maybe we should start another...lol

i spoke with joy. being that she is a former pfo employee, i'm rather confident she knows the ins and outs of the patent.

thanks,
ben

I cant decide between the reef brite or the stunners... whici one will make your coral's color pop more... are they two totally diff types of lighting?

Joy knows what she is talking about FO SHO!

I know Joy, and I know she knows her stuff, but the statement was completely incorrect as far as how the patent is applied. Using a variable voltage power supply doesn't get around the patent. Like I stated before, the patent doesn't specify exactly how the LEDs are controlled, but covers that the LEDs can be dimmed. If you dim the LEDs in any way shape or form, it's in violation, provided that the fixture is intended to support marine life. If Reefbrite ever got pinged by Orbitech, all they have to say is that the strips are for supplimental lighting and can't support marine life.

Pacific Sun is already headed in this direction, and I can see a number of other startups using the same tact.

This really gets back to the fact that this concept is nothing new, regardless of the application. Anyone with half a brain could put a few LEDs with dimmable drivers over a tank and call it a day. Everything is off the shelf and readily available to the public.

Anyway, we are getting off topic.

hmmm well you can search "adding diy led lighting" poster is littlebigaj you can just search his name also
