Hello all! So I am very new to saltwater tanks currently starting a biocube 32!! I just finished adding saltwater yesterday. However, I went to go play with the siphon that I had ordered and had forgotten I had a cream on my hands for my eczema (betamethasone dipropionate) which is an anti-inflammatory steroid. My hand barely touched the water, it was like the tip of my finger the only reason I even thought about it was I saw a tiny film on the water which I assume was from the cream. I grabbed a lid and scooped most of it up that had the film. Although I know its impossible I got all of it.

Again I have just started the tank, I have not put any of the good bacteria to start the cycle or anything. In peoples opinions who have more experience than me, should I completely empty the tank and start over, or just a partial water change...? Like I said I think the amount of the medicine that is in the water is very very small but I don't want to take any chances as I am just starting out. Not sure if a steroid like that isnt a huge deal once I get my filters going and good bacteria in there, or if its harmful to fish and should make sure there isnt any of it in there.

I also dont want to go through the process of making 32 more gallons of RODI water and mixing the salt etc if that would be unnecessary.

Anyways, not sure if I am worrying for nothing or if I would be smart to start over.... Any thoughts would be appreciated. And needless to say I will be investing in gloves or making sure I have very clean hands when doing anything with my tank from now on........ TIA

I wouldn't worry if it's a new tank with no livestock. Even if it did have some livestock some carbon should be sufficient.

You should be ok. Use of carbon will break down any toxins. Consider this $20 investment below:

Skimmer also remove dissolved organic components, like oils or some medications.

Carbon and a skimmer, no biggie with no livestock.

I have these same gloves. The red rubber part is nice and thick and help prevent cuts from the sharp rocks when moving things around.
