Hello everyone, I bought a baby Tessalata eel a few days ago. He will not eat Krill, what Food will work? How long can he go without feeding? Do they get used to a time to eat and only eat then? I am perplexed, have kept an adult for years and never had these problems, he would eat anything.

I’ve seen him open his mouth, swim in slight busts and rub himself a few times. It, looks like he has a problem with his mouth....I wish I could be more descriptive. No signs of ick/velvet on him or other fish. Maybe I need to treat him with prazipro?

Yesterday, he looked like he was close to dead all curled up under the hiding spot and his head was by his tail. He was sideways and I though he gone soon. Today I woke up and he’s normal again. Thank god! I have never had so much trouble feeding an “aggressive” animal, any advice?

Thank you.

New additions may need to be enticed to feed with something live. Try a molly, once he eats a few, a couple of feedings to get his strength up, start to introduce orther dead foods. Silversides(preferably Hikari brand), octopus, squid, shrimp; try and limit krill as too much will bind vit B1 and cause severe issue down the line.

My eel was 8-9 inch when I got him. I started with live ghost shrimp. Also from the picture , you may want to put some pvc pipe or a place he can fully hide to feel comfortable. Mine is now 2 foot and I dont even see him unless it’s feeding time.

Good point, he does need a den to feel secure and settle in, whether it's a pvc or a rock den so he can fully cover his entire body.

Thank you guys. Ok I will get a pvc pipe. What about the mouth flashing, do you think he has flukes?
Should I use prazipro? This is a qt btw.

Absolutely beautiful fish!

Ya he needs some cover, probably stressed out.

My new eel wouldn’t eat for a week or so, silversides from supermarket finally enticed him now he’s eating everything.

My moray does the weird mouth things too. I know what you mean. I think it’s how they smell food.
