are there any types of eel that are reef safe? i see some in tanks but most places say not to or with caution. and will any of these type be safe around small fish?

I am not an expert but I have seen zebra eels kept in large reef tanks. Some have had luck keeping them with invertebrates but I would not count on it. One would most likely eat all your inverts and maybe small fish. Again, I am not an expert and I have no experience so don't count completely on my opinion. ;)
I would just wait to here from an expert

A snowflake eel might leave smaller fish alone if you keep it will fed.
Here is a good example of a zebra eel in a reef tank:

I have a zebra eel in my reef tank for about 8 months now and had the eel for about 2 years. I never had an issue with the eel going after inverts and small fish. I even see my fire shrimp clean his mouth once in a while. I'll try to post pictures tonight

I would defiantly listen to this guy:)

I'm about to add a Gold Dwarf Moray to my well stocked 155BF...Fingers crossed. I have been waiting over a year to pull the trigger on this species. SHOULD ship Friday.

Not remotely as expensive as the Dragon Neil, but not cheap. I have been waiting a long time, and did some research and looked around and found if you get one shipped directly from Hawaii, they aren't as expensive. I paid $125 for mine... Add a few extra fish to your order and you can trick yourself into thinking each fish was not as expensive by dividing your shipping costs by the number of fish you purchased. ...:) you are still floating down that river in Egypt, it's just a more comfortable trip
