Egg crate grid??

I used to keep African cichlids. I would put the light grid egg crate below rock work to keep the fish from toppling it over when they dig and to help spread weight.

Do people do the same with reef tanks and rock work?
 
Yes, very popular but let me warn you that it is not easy if you decide to go bare bottom lol. I am currently removing my substrate and slowly cutting out sections of egg crate so it won't be visible. Anytime the substrate was moved (unless you have a deep sandbed) the egg crate became visible and drove me crazy. I am going to cover the visible edges with live rock rubble and acans.
