Egg crate purpose

And one way to create that effect is reduction in sand disturbance, either way the tank, yours, is it done? How's that going?

Is it done.... never but I finally got it at a decent position. I've been having a nightmare with adding the sump in. Since then, I've had a few coral get on the mad side. Think it was due to salinity jumping up to high. Other than that's it's looking good so far. You will certainly have to stop by to see it maybe this weekend or something.

Count on it, I'm pretty excited to see what you've done with it, all I've seen so far are pictures and we know those don't do justice.

The bubbly-doohickey.

That come from curing one of the many problems with the sump. The overflow pulls tons of air down the pipe. Kinda like a whirlpool. Without air it would have no choice but to be a solid syphon. This was two problems for me. One being that all these bubbles burst at the water surface creating a spray all over the place. This just wasn't gonna work.

Getting a filter sock would catch the bubbles and take care of that problem however, that creates a new problem. That is the chamber for my skimmer to go. I don't have enough room there for a skimmer and a filter sock. That left me with two problems and only one stone to throw. I got some PVC parts and built a skimmer that would run completely off the overflow. I've still got a little work to do to it but I actually plan to make it an out of sump skimmer.

One thing I'm still having a small problem with is deciding what to use as a collection cup.

Might have an idea once I see it.

As for the egg crate bottom. It's not a good idea. One main purpose is to reduce weight on the glass at the center of the tank. Trapping sand into little squares is gonna be more detrimental than beneficial. Some people get on an egg crate binge and start putting in everywhere. In all reality, unless the live rock you are using is made of diamond, there is no point to it. Some people might argue with that but then again some people think that 8-tracks were actually a high quality media.

LOL I have egg crates on the bottom of my tank, just in case one day I accidentally drop my rock. It doesn't matter if it's made of diamond.. I have heard of couple horrible stories...

That is understandable. I don't move the rock around in my tank though. Once it's in there, it stays untill the tank is replaced or moved. I won't spend much time dropping rock.

What do you guys think about using egg crate with one inch pvc pipes to place all my rock so it seats one inch above the bottom on a bare botton tank and run a lot of flow trough the bottom

The reason I put egg crate on the bottom of my tank was for more even weight distribution. You don't have small focused pressure points where a lot of weight is being focused to one location.

Makes sense, caught my daughter playing in my tank one day and if she played with the rock it could have shifted and caused an avalanche of rock that could have resulted in a break, I tanned her hide, mostly because she pulls have been in a world of hurt if she found a bristle worm.

this is the more common reason and understandable in lare footprint tanks. ive only got two large rocks placed centrally in my tank. After thinking about it for a while, I realized that the sand bed keeps the wieght spread out. Id feel better using egg crate on larger tank though. Glass is quite stong but sometimes its easy to feel I put to much faith in it.
