Egg crate sump baffles

I want to change out my sump for a larger one. Prebuilt are to expensive and I want control over my layout so building it myself this time. My question is how important are baffles? Could I potentially just use some egg crate to put in baffles to keep the refugium in place? Pros and cons. Pictures if you currently run this

Baffles cut down noise and reduce micro bubbles and also direct water through filtration stages, then to return cleaner water to your tank. If there is nothing to provide the water with a direction much of the water in the sump won't get filtered. Baffles will allow you to create different levels in the sump.Jan
If using egg crate, they will be of very little benefit

The biggest advantage for baffles IMO is for keeping a section of the sump at a constant level for a skimmer.
