So my old Eheim 100w heater was starting to get very inconsistent after a very short time, so i decided to go out and buy a new one yesterday afternoon. I put it in my biocube 32 (that is still cycling) and set it to 77. When i got home from work, the temperature of my tank was at 90 degrees! Thank god it was still in the cycling process. The heater was off so much, that i can't even calibrate it to the right temperature as there is a stop on the heater that only allows so much. Be careful with these heaters and make sure you calibrate them before putting them in the tank.

I’ve had a similar issues with mine in multiple tanks of multiple sizes, both fresh and saltwater. I do not like them at all. Problem is.... I can’t find any better heater out there. I really wish someone would take the time to make a better one.

I take it that it’s an Eheim glass heater with in built thermostat?

You’re always going to get temperature variation with a glass heater, even more so with a built in thermostat (not sure if the digital ones make any difference).

Spend $20, get an STC temp controller. You can then run glass heaters much more effectively or buy a titanium heater such as Schego to use with the controller for added accuracy & reliability.

It may not be totally your heaters fault Biocubes are notorious for running hot.. I would check your heater out of tank in a bucket of water.

I am aware of the biocubes running on the warmer side, but over 10 degrees sounds crazy to me. I saved the heater to use for my salt mixing bucket, so i will test that tomorrow when i starting making water.

Yeah i actually just started to look into those. The inkbird 308 is 34 off of amazon. I will more than likely order that after christmas.

Yeah its hard to find a "good" heater without breaking the bank. As with about everything in this hobby for some reason. I just went to petsmart and bought a different one. After the holidays i do plan on buying an inkbird 308 controller so i won't have to worry about the heating in my tank. For only 34$ can't beat that.

I have my Ehiem Jager heater on my RKL controller. I set the temp on the heat to about 80°f, no idea if its accurate, and set the RK to turn tne heater on at 77.4 and off at 77.8. Temps stay at 77.5-79 even on warm days. I never trust heaters, temp control is the main reason I have a controller. Heater, fan and lighting can be truned on and off if temps get out of line.

I’ve read very mixed reviews about using the Inkbird with sw aquariums. Definitely do a search on r2r to see what I mean so you know before you purchase. I was considering one a while back also.

I've used an inkbird on a couple different systems of mine, the early concerns about the prob eroding have been corrected according to the manufacturer. I've had mine in salt for a little over a year with no issues.

Get an STC-1000. They are $15 and I've never, ever heard of one going wrong.

In terms of heaters, Schego are brilliant and not exactly breaking the bank. You do pay a little more than a cheap glass heater, but considering all life in a tank often depends on the heater, it shouldn't be a big issue.

I have had good results with the via aqua titanium heaters.

I currently run the 500 watt in my tank and use a 300 watt in my water change system.

Controller is accurate and has a remote temp sensor.

I locate the sensor where the overflow drains into the sump so I can get an accurate reading of actual display water.
