Eheim Cannister - Ruined?

I recently adapted my old Eheim Cannister filter to work like a portable aquatic vacuum cleaner and it's been amazing at helping me take back a tank that got overgrown by GHA. Unfortunately I was not paying attention when cleaning it after using it and I accidently flooded/immersed the upper part with the pump in it. After I let it dry it out is there any chance it will still work? Would it be dangerous at all to try?

Rinse it thoroughly with fresh water then take it outside plug it in and stand back!


A couple of years ago I had a box fan get flooded by hurricane Dorian. It sat in nasty salt water for a couple of hours. I hosed it down with fresh water, turned it on, and its still working today. (I use it in my outside "man cave".)

rinse with ro water and let it dry completely before turning it on and it should be ok

Appreciate the replies, thankfully it was flooded with tap water and not saltwater. I can give it a rinse with RODI I guess, at this point it can't make things worse.

Thats what i would do, especially if your tap water is very hard as it will leave deposits when it dries.

Good chance it will still function given that it was fresh water and you let it dry thoroughly before turning it on.

If it is like the 2215 or 2217 Classics, I am pretty sure the motor is completely sealed and would be fine. I have put the entire head underwater and turned it on to test the pumps. Even the larger 2262 or 2260 use submersible Eheim pumps. I think you should be fine.
