Hello,

I'm mainly trying to see if I should just buy another heater. It's been sitting at 78.8 for 5 days, I lower it to just around 77 based on the calibrated temp of 78.8 and it goes up to over 79 after? Is this thing backwards?! Is that common with eheim heater? Is there a better brand for a 44gal tank?

From what I understand, Ehiem is a pretty quality brand. I've never heard of them being wired backward. I would think if that was the case, temp would be way off of the setting. Any chance your lights could be affecting temp? Have you noticed if the heater is on with the temp at 79? If it has the "on" light, you can adjust it up and down and see when it comes on. It's not uncommon for the temp indicator on the heater and actual temp to be slightly off with most heaters.

I would buy another heater. Always good to have a backup. That should help you figure out if the first one is bad or what. I find heaters that have temp sensors built in are always a bit fussy.

Thanks for the reply! I'm actually not running lights since it's a new tank. Trying not to feed algae growth right now. I did notice the eheim light was on a lot after dropping the temp, I dropped it some more to see if it goes down or continues to climb.

I like the JBJ Ti true temp heaters. They come with a controller and seperate temp sensor. I use 2 in my tank. I had one sensor go bad after 2 years. I got a new sensor and that fixed the problem.

Most heaters are going to fluctuate between 1 and 2 degrees of the set temp. They are NOT going to stay lower then that. If you want it lower then that, then you need a controller. And you could use the same heater. You can buy an inkbird for like $30 on Amazon. And that's all BRS's controller is, a re-branded Inkbird that they sell for more.

I have the Eheim 300W heater. I had the same issue. After reading the manual it states to remove power from the heater when making adjustments and then turn the power back on. I guess when you remove power it resets to the new set point. The heater is consistently 1-1.5 degrees higher than set point.

Calibrating Jagers are a bit of a pain. I recommend just using your thermometer to measure and adjust temp. Once its dialed in where you want it, it should be very stable.

We have 4 Ehiem heaters in our system (approx 425 gallons). 3 are 200 watt & one 150 watt. This offers layers of redundancy if any one of the heaters fail. Individually, the heaters are intentionally 'undersized'. When we had a smaller system (80 gallons), a single heater of another brand failed to turn off & fried the tank. That won't happen again.

All four are calibrated to 79 degF over several months. The system is constant at 78.5. It's been my experience that heaters can take awhile to settle.
