It's a 300w. Set for 76°. My tank temp reads 80° via digital & glass thermometers. Yet the heater keeps coming on.
It's in my fuge/sump.
How do I correct this issue?

I would be surprised if there is that much variation between sump temperature and display tank temperature. The thermostatic indication on the heater is notoriously inaccurate. Just back down the setting on the dial until it maintains the desired temperature. Or better yet, purchase a temperature controller that will ensure the heater maintains the desired temperature.

Ordered a controller? Thanks [emoji2]

Definitely need peace of mind. Just went out and checked the temp after backing it down again, tanks already at 78° so I turned it up until the light came on. Now watch it go back up to 80° grrrr [emoji38]

what controller did you order?

When I start having issues with a heater, it's time to start looking for a new one.
IMO they are the weak link in our tanks. Plus they are one of the more dangerous pieces of equipment we have.
So even when a normally dependable brand such as Eheim Jäger has issues then it's my signal to start pricing a new one.

Got the AZoo. The reviews were great and it fit my budget. It's now connected. This heater isn't even 2yrs old. I'm sure I didn't calibrate it right.

Here's another dilemma. My digital thermometer says 79.9°
My glass thermometer in the sump/fuge area says 80°
The new AZoo says 25c which is 77°

Which one do I trust?

Yes a controller is a must for a heater in my opinion. The cheap thermostats are prone to failure and you'll always want that controller present to cut it off when the tank gets too warm. I completely ignore the numbers on the heater dial, and just do all the programming via the controller. Even a cheap dedicated temperature controller is better than trusting the heater

since 2 of the 3 are so close to being the same I would go with them.
I think the numbers on my heater controllers are off a little too.

I think you should buy the controller and replace the heater if you can't get it to shut off. If anything goes wrong with the controller or it's probe is left out of the water during maintenance, your bad heater will still overheat the tank.

Positioning of the controller probe in the display and the heater in the sump will allow a much more stable system temperature. If the return pump stops or is left off accidentally, you could overheat the sump killing everything in it. I actually use 2 temperature probes so the sump is monitored plus have the heaters set below 80 as backup.

I got a heater included with a tank kit from a different manufacturer that would not turn off regardless of temperature setting. I will never use it except maybe in an emergency while ordering a replacement.

I like Neo-therm and Finnex heaters better but I have a Jager too and it works perfectly. The Jager is bigger which means it's positioning is less flexible which has been annoying for me.

My heater is in the fuge area of my sump. I'm assuming it's getting good flow.
Controller probe is in the DT. At what depth should the probe be positioned? High, med or low level?

My finnex heater is in my sump near the return pump area, and the probe is on the other end of the sump.
IMO it really shouldn't matter that much as long as what ever you set the temp at on the controller, that you get the right temp in the tank.

I agree, I don't really trust the thermostat in my 2 eheim heaters, one is different than the others. I set it up to maintain 78-80 and I set my Runco to cut power to the heater when the Runco detect temp at 82

Well hells bells. The AZoo comes preset at 26c which is 78.8F, good for me. But according to the AZoo digital readout it's 25c and hasn't moved, red light being on suggests that the heater is on, yet the heater is off.
My digital thermometer reads 79.9.
So yeah I'm now even more confused [emoji854]

Does the azoo need to be calibrated like other controllers? That could be your issue
