Eienna's 50g Reef

It will come together, everything happens for a reason, reef tanks are slow and steady

I have improved my qt with some older parts I dug up, and I have acquired a filefish and two peppermint shrimp...or at least I THINK it's two peppermints. One may be a camel. Certainly can't complain about the price even if one IS a camel; I had some coupons that made them pretty darned close to free.

Camels are coral killers
Peppermints can also get a taste for corals as well be weary

As can filefish, so I will be watching like a hawk. I am aware I could lose my corals - but if I don't get rid of these aiptasia soon, I'll lose them anyway.

Thanks for the heads-up, though. I was not aware of that aspect of camel shrimp. Once it comes out enough to get a good look at it, I'll make sure it's not actually a camel. If it is, I'll either take it to my lfs or possibly feed it to my mom's puffer. XP

I used to think these filefish were ugly...but he's actually pretty cool. His camo changes depending on what rock he's next to. XD I also appreciate that he seems completely chill. No aggression towards anyone else, and nobody bothers him either.

He's still kind of afraid of me, but I'll try to get a photo soon.

After as careful an inspection as I can do with critters that don't care to be inspected, I have decided beyond reasonable doubt that both shrimp are peppermints. Yay!

I'm in horrible muscular pain - the muscles in my lower back keep seizing up and it's the worst pain I can remember ever having (aside from dental injections, I guess.) Hopefully some resting up will help but I could use your prayers.

All the fish and inverts are well, on a brighter note. :) Hopefully these aiptasia are gone soon, though...they're really starting to hurt my corals.

I'm pretty sure I told you that a couple months ago. As long as the filefish has aiptasia to eat it'll leave your other corals alone. Also, they are big eaters and if you keep it well fed it'll leave your corals alone.

No problem there...I'm an admitted big feeder XD

The tank just got a massive impromptu rescape...I had to catch my anthias to QT and medicate them. :( I had been watching them closely because I would see them rub their gill area on the rocks at least once every day or two. Now it's worse. They're still eating but they're breathing overfast and doing kind of a weird thing with their mouths, gaping and shaking their heads, and flashing more often. Definitely makes me think there's a gill issue, so they have been "hospitalized" for treatment. Currently using seachem paraguard, since I'm convinced that's the safest I have and the problem could be gill flukes or ich. If they don't get better on that...well, I'll have to figure it out from there.

I think I've got the tank rescaped to something I can look at without cringing (perfectionist that I am). I'll post a photo later.

I think I need to try and get ahold of some prazipro...haven't seen it on my local stores, though...

Could someone please remind me around February to start putting some cash aside for MAX this next year? It IS still coming to CA besides the Florida deal, right?

I just trapped my poor gramma inside a rock....

When I redid the aquascape, I forgot to check the rocks - the royal gramma literally hides INSIDE the rock - and accidentally trapped her at the bottom of the pile, with the sandbed blocking her way out. I was afraid I might have trapped her somewhere when I didn't see her this morning...mom helped me find her and, thankfully, she appears no worse for the wear. I have to redo the scape again, but at least she's safe.

Uuugh. I hate tank moves. Messes up the whole system. Even with improved filtration my nitrate s have risen to ~40ppm in a very short time. Guess I'll be kicking up the water changes for a while.

I didn't test for much too long. Must not make that mistake again.

Lousy, lousy photo...

I want my old scape back...
Thankfully, the anthias seem to be improving. I also put the clowns in the QT because they were clamping their fins and not being their usual swimmy selves. They also are much improved. I should be able to return them all to the display in a couple of days. Yay!

...the filefish is not touching the aiptasia. Doesn't seem my two peppermint shrimp are either. What a pain! Maybe my LFS can get a small copperband in for me.

Could anyone do me a favor and confirm that this is indeed a matted filefish? He changes color depending on what rock he's near.
