When i bought a set up for really cheap it came with a battery backup. Its an IBM UPS 1500T.

Only thing is the battery is bad.

So i am wondering if it would be possible to take out the old battery and connect the leads to a 12v deep cycle battery?

Yep, they make replacement batteries. Just look for a lead acid with the same specs.

Well apparently these ups are only made to run a short time. Long enough to save your work on your computer maybe an hour?
Id like to be able to run at least my return pump for several hours.
So i dont just want to replace with the same battery.

What specs do i need to look for? Obviously 12V, and the Ah would be higher with a bigger battery...?

Yep. Amp hours reflects the storage capacity. You only want to run an in tank pump or two usually on the ups systems. 18Ah should let you run a few small pumps for a while.

Ok thanks. I found a calculator. An 18Ah gel battery will run my 1.33 amp return pump for about 5.5 hours.

But what specs would make a battery incompatible with this unit?

Also its two batteries wired together. Does that mean I need 2 batteries no matter what size?

Any 12v constant charge lead acid should be fine. It depends on how they were wired if you need two. If they were wired in parallel then you need one battery. In series and you need two.

They are in series. Thanks a lot for your help icecool

Well i finally got around to getting some batteries. I went with a couple lead acid deep cycle batteries.

They are 140 reserve capacity, so they should be around 70 Ah.

You guys have any pointers on wiring this up?

Should be pretty simple. The UPS had an extra 100amp fuse inside it as well as an extra adapter which i plan to use just like on the old battery.

Any advice would help.

Got it all figured out.

Should be able to run 3 amps worth of stuff for over 8 hours.[emoji106]
