my elegance coral retracts a good bit during the night. is that normal? it also sometimes takes it a very long time in the morning for it to inflate. anyone have any thoughts or suggestions or experience?

Mine retracts at night as well. By this I mean, you can see a fair bit of the base of the skeleton, however you can still see the ends of the tentacles. I assume this is normal just like zoas close up, etc. If yours is sucking itself completing into it's skeleton, I may be a bit more concerned. It varies on how long it will take to open up/extend during the day. I consider mine to be perfectly healthy going on 8 months now.

thanks. sounds like my situation exactly. i added some new elegance to the tank its worrying me a bit because the healthy elegance has beet retracting more than normal and looks worse than before. I heard they may be dying from a parasite or something but i dont believe that ...but in any case i dont want to infect my healthy one with a parasite from a sick one. oh well though i guess ill ride it out.

Totally normal for it shrink up at night. What mine does

There is some type of infection that seems to plague Indonesian/Jakarta Elegance corals. I don't think anyone has been able to come up with an answer, but mixing the Indos with Aussies can/will cause the Aussies to contract the malady. If your new one is an Indo Elegance, this might be the reason.

+1. I would just keep a close eye on it. You say it is looking worse than before? How is the new coral looking? How long have you had them both?

My elegance retracts pretty tight at night and is open fully about 2 hours after my lights transition from dawn to full light.

also i believe my healthy elegance is an indo because my LFS buys only from that area and that is where im getting all these elegance. What you think about that? I guess it could mean a number of things....

the two new elegance look better than when i got them from the LFS. One of them instantly looked great and the other took about two days. Ive had the new elegance for almost a week now. I may have just been paranoid and I also irritated my healthy elegance but im going to keep a close eye on it and keep posting. I really appreciate everyone checking out this thread and helping me and and commenting.

Mine retracts a little after lights out and if fully opened in the morning by the time my MH comes on which is 2 hours of atinics.

A lot of the Indo elegances I have seen had gall crab infestations.

Yes there is a unknown malady affecting elegance corals - purportedly indo elegance. It is transmittable to ausie elegance as well.

The symptoms are: shortening and thickening of tentacles. Thickening of the oral disk, Retraction. Necrosis and death.
Time of onset: 1 week to 1 month after introduction to the tank.
Cures/treatment: None have proven effective.

I've watched literally dozens of elegance corals come through my local LFS. Any that stay in stock for more than a week or two show signs of the disease. Only one have I seen infect and recover. - ausie.

I wish I could offer some advice - other than buy from a local reefer who has had the coral for a while.

My elegance does that. I am trying to get rid of him though. He has eaten 2 cleaner shrimps now and is becoming a royal pita. He is huge and nice looking, but I like peace in my reef.

thanks everyone. scary. im setting up a 40 breeder to put the new elegance into i guess. hope my good one didnt contract the malady.

droblack, whats a gall crab infestation look like? i thought i something new on my healthy elegance's skeleton; a small creature that was black and spiny looked like a little urchin attached to the skeleton. for some reason my first instinct was to super glue over the thing and hope it just died and went away....

They burrow a hole down into the base of the corals flesh, and poke out from time to time. Probably leads to other infections.
