Just got my second triton test back with elevated Chromium. The first test in November showed high chromium and mercury. I found that the bracket for the AI prime was touching the water so I flipped it around so the metal part is on the back side of the tank.

This seemed to solve the mercury issue but the chromium is still elevated. Barring a metal piece rusting away in a hidden corner I have a couple suspects.
  • The metal blade for the flipper cleaner/scraper.
  • A metal binder clip that I use to close the end of the silicon drain hose to the skimmer. It's not submerged but it close enough to the water that I'm suspicious.
Are there any other possible hidden metal pieces that people have found which I should be checking for? What are the pros and cons of using any of the heavy metal reducers out there?

If you have the garden hose clips on any pipes ? When I had heavy metals I used the triton detox , works very well .. just make sure you follow the indtructions and run carbon afterwards..

How high is it?
The chromium slider was pegged all the way to the right in the red. I don't have the exact number; Unfortunately I can't login to Triton to view the report since it is no longer accepting my password. . Naturally their password reset link is no longer there.

It may not be high enough to be a true problem, but a metal removing materials such as metasorb, detox, cuprisorb, or a polyfilter might be useful. :)

Things like hose clamps may have a chromium alloy coating, so just look again carefully for any metal parts.

Looks like it's 19 whatever-units of Cr

I'll give the tank a good going over again but I'm betting it was the scraper blade for the flipper which I always left in the tank... rookie move perhaps. I'll see if I can dig up a plastic clamp for the skimmer drain.

I have the same levels per my last ICP test. I removed the algae clip from my tank. Hopefully the levels go down

update on this? I randomly have 4.6 ug/l chromium on my most recent triton test and I am wondering how accurate it is since nothing has really changed. My iodine tested 231 ug/l (after always being in good range) and they said that was because they couldnt test it accurately with my super high phosphate of > 1ppm. I wonder if any other ICP results can be skewed by high phosphate.

@Randy Holmes-Farley

Thoughts?

Are you dosing KZ Acroglow?

I dose daily 0.02microgram/L daily and it never shows up on the ICP's, means that is roughly the amount that a normal Reeftank may consume at least.
Check for Stainless steel and Nickel plated materials used in the tank system ;-)

No kz acroglow. Plan on checking my vortech magnets as theyve cracked before but never seen chromium as a result just tin mainly.

Thanks
