Eliminating Blue Clove Polyps with Fenbendazole

ok today started thomas lab bendazole, i hope everything will go well, i put around 70% of 1 packet of 250mg into my 70g

im going for 48 hours now, i hope i get rid of it im a little worried everything looks good exept my gorgonia i removed most of my snails. ill be waiting for full 72 hours before i start skimming and putting carbon in

I did this treatment a few weeks ago. I have a 240 gallon display connected to other tanks and sumps totaling around 1000 gallons. I turned off the return to my 240 and treated it by its self. Used one 250mg packet. The next day all the cloves closed up and seemed to start dying after another day. I'd say 60% of them died off with this one treatment and 3 weeks later I am seeing them open back up and looking fine. I started another treatment two days ago. (I also lost a tube nem I wasn't able to remove)

A side note (and really the reason for my post)
Once treatment was completed I just turned the return on and figured diluting the medication in the whole system would be fine especially as I run Ozone, Carbon and UV. Within 2 days all the xenia in my frag growouts (random pieces I was happy to see go) was dead, as well as three large colonies of GSP. In addition in one of my tanks I had a huge gorgonian (8" by 6" by 6") that completely died.

It seems that even a small amount of this medication has negative effects on gorgonians, xenia and GSP so I suggest removing them while doing treatment if you want to keep them. I have lots of SPS and LPS and none of the other corals seemed bothered. Not sure if I had snails die off as I also have an abundance of wrasses that probably made quick work of the dying snails, scattering their shells.

I appreciate everyone who as contributed to this thread. I'm going to take the plunge myself as the littler f-er's have spread despite my best effort.

After reviewing the entire thread I'm not seeing any reports of adverse affects on zoas am I correct?

Additionally, I run ferric oxide in my phosphate reactor. Should I kill this during the treatment?

How have people handling dosing during treatment? I use vitamin C, bionic 1 & 2 & mg and finally lugols.

Thanks in advance.

i personally stoped gfo and carbon and skimming, but i did not stop dosing 3 part fauna balin after 72 hours i put carbon and skimming back in 2 days wen im going for 1 week im going to do a large water change and put gfo back on. everything looks good my zoanthoes are happy my only bad is my gorgonia id dont think its gonna recover but its a small sacrifice if i fully eliminate bsp

I had seen you mention about the gorgonian, sucks, but small price to pay if it works. Thanks!

I have BTAs, a ton of small snails, lots of mature acros as I have been in the hobby a long time. They were all fine! My mandarin pair over 6 months old passed away. I have a 240g with tons of pods and they both passed away soon after the treatment. Anyone have mandarins when they did this or was it somehow coincidence? A picture of it a week before

just an update after 2 weeks their is no bcp i do have an alge break out which is i under control. the last few days i have removed about 50 huge bristle worms almost dead. wow i had no idea i had so many

I’m considering dosing my tank with Fenbendazole to eradicate clove polyps that have nearly taken over my entire tank. I have a mixed 29 gallon reef with the following inhabitants:

Corals:
Zoos
Mushrooms
Nephthea
Heliopora (blue ridge)
Euphyllia
Turbinaria
Favia
Xenia
Acans

Inverts:
Variety of snails and hermits
rock anemone
Cleaner shrimp
Peppermint pistol shrimp

From what I’ve read, it seems that the snails, nephthea, heliopora, xenia (basically all soft corals) would be in most danger - I would remove as much of those as I could prior to dosing.

The main reason for my post is that I’m trying to find a definitive answer on whether or not Fenbendazole will harm shrimp. I can remove my cleaner shrimp easily enough, but catching a pistol shrimp would be another endeavor entirely. Experiences?

Thanks!

Just did it to my 20 im reef...had 8 large patches of bcp 20 mg of med four days...only white dots remain...no harm to snails...sps...shrimp....zoas and fish...awesome....just a little brown algae....

I dosed about 2/3rds of a 250 mg packet for my 57 gallon with a 20 gallon sump. I’m 72 hours in and BCPs have been closed but are not showing white or “signs” of death yet. Not sure what to do but I’m leaning towards leaving the med in for another day before adding carbon and doing a water change. No skimmer on my system, only a fuge.

Update. Some remnants of the growth pad remain but no open polyps. I haven’t done a water change yet but BRS Rox carbon seems to have done an amazing job removing the med.

So I am finally going to take the plunge and dose my tank to get rid of BCP this weekend. I have tried the kalk paste but all it did was knock them back a bit but they keep coming back.

Here is my plan:
I have a 180G DT and a sump of about 60G. I reckon my total system volume is about 250G
-I have removed my gorgonians, leather coral and GSP.
-I have some very large turbo snails. Do i take them out?
-I have a 250mg fenbendazole pack
-I want to turn off the return and dose the entire package into the DT and not the sump. I have lots of macro algae in there. Can i do this?
-will turn off skimmer, UV and carbon and GFO reactors.
-Will dose DT (180G) with entire 250 mg fenbendazole for 30-48 hrs (is 48 hrs too long?)
-after 48 hrs ,will do 15% wc by vacuuming the sand and blowing the rocks off,
-add back carbon and GFO, will turn back on return pump to further dilute drug, turn back on skimmer
-do 10-15% wc for the next 3 weeks

Do any one have any issue with this plan?
Any other suggestions/corrections before i start this?

much thanks

Milton

take your large snails out. My anemones did great. Aiptasia did great :( My small reproducing snails all did fine. I did have trouble adding large snails back into the system. I think it took me almost a month. It didn’t work the first time so I had to increase dose a little bit. I have tons of rock work absorbing the meds which I think was the reason first round didn’t work. Worked the second time with increased dose but couldn’t add snails till a lot later.

Remember that large snail die off can cause a lot of ammonia spike. Lots of rotting flesh in a tank is never good. Be careful with it check several nights in a row for the snails as they are nocturnal and I had several hide deep in rock. I have around 250 gallons of water and high ratio of rock work to water

What do you guys think of killing the return pump and dosing only the DT and not the sump?
Also, was planning to dose the DT for a full 48 hrs?
I will also remove my large snails to QT tank
