Eliminating Blue Clove Polyps with Fenbendazole

I took the plunge. Here is my BCP at 18 hours after treatment with Fenbendazole. Definitely getting affected.

I did an approximate 1mg per gallon dose. It's been about 24 hours and I haven't seen any recession or disturbance in the cloves...

Should I do a second dose of 1mg/gallon?

So...

On day 2, I added the other half of the packet (250mg) to my 120g tank. Today (day 3), the CP's look super ticked off. Much more so than after day 1 with just half the packet. Shriveled up with little white dots.

I'm wondering if a progressive approach to the dosing may end up being a good idea. We might be able to slowly build the level of medication without ticking everything else off in the tank by tossing in one large initial dose.

I'm going to see how they look tomorrow and possibly add another half a packet, and then give it a couple more days. I've been reading about people beating them back, only to have them return. Maybe slowly upping the dose while they are weakened will end them once and for all.

I looked in the sump last night, and it's still teeming with pods, so that's a good thing I'll follow up with how it goes.

Everything seems happy in the tank (knock on wood), besides the CP's. I threw another 1/3 of a packet in tonight. Depending on how this goes, I may keep adding a little bit daily until they're all dead and gone. I'll be back in the office tomorrow to check it.

SPS corals don't look quite as colorful... I guessing the increase in phosphates and nitrates may have something to do with that since I'm not running a skimmer, carbon, or poly filter right now. I have kept up with the Nopox and continue to keep my fuge online, but I don't think that's enough. The skimmer pulls out a lot of garbage...

I'm wondering if the CP's metabolize the medication, thus reducing the effective amounts actively available in the system? Hence the reason some people get a second wave of them... Maybe adding a little more each day keeps the levels high enough to kill them all, for good. Fingers crossed.

Am i the only person who love those clove polyps? I have them all over my tank too and honestly they really bring out my coral colors. Ineed they are invasive but not aggressive. They grow on my rock preventing any algae on my rock so my tank is algae free. My tank is full blown sps and it doesnt bother the sps at all

Me too! I love my blue cloves and they don’t really bother anything.

Hello All,
Been reading a Ton about this and finally got all the large colony’s out of the main display and dosed the tank this evening with Max Draco findings of Safegaurd.

Here’s what I did.

removed all snails, and serpent stars. I do not have any leathers or softies. This was a choir that required me to tear down half the tank.

Did a 25 gal water change this morning.
Used 1.5G of safegaurd 22.2% fembenozol
1g Makes 112 Gals

here’s my set up.
Red Sea 525 Xl 160 gal total volumn
Sps dominate , lots of large colony’s so make me nervous.
Chalices, Zoas

turned off all equipment. Skimmer and calcuim reactor. I didn’t want the meds in my reactor media so I will be dosing 2 part the next few days.

I hope this kills these jerks. I have dremelled them off, tooth brush ect and they just keep growing . I will keep everyone posted as time progresses.

Morning update ,

lights turned on at 9:30 am. BCP looks shriveled alittle bit in certain areas. Little patch of Xenia is dying off which is a good sign the meds are working. Plan on hitting it with another.5g tonight or tomorrow. I’ll keep everyone posted.

24 Hr update

small patch of Xenia is looking dead . Xenia is sucked in and ready to come off the rock.

BCP is shriveled up in most areas and sucked in. Defiantly looking like it’s receding.
water is alittle cloudy but not bad

All sps, acons, favai and chalices are open and seem to be happy. Candy Cane colony trumpets are open and happy.

48 Hr update ,
All sps are doing fine, acons. Favia, candy cane and chalices are doing great. BCP are shrinking and white dits are visible, there are some patches where are concerning of them might coming back, but will see tomorrow.

all equipment is still off and dosing Kalk to substitute the Ca reactor, also doing 2 part.
Going to do a big water change tomorrow around 6 pm to get the 72 hr Mark.

Did a 40 gal water change Friday and turned on all the equipment. Took a tooth brush to all the dead decay and sucked out about 29 gals of funck.

all the BCP is gone and dead. I can finally see all my rock again and the Zoas are cleared up. Everything worked great and all my corals are thriving..

Everything went very well, even my fire shrimp and pistol shrimp made it. Just started adding the snails in about 4 days ago and all are still alive and kickin.

All BCP are gone with out a trace. I have alittle algae bloom happening but the snails are taking care of it, nothing really to worry about. All the live stock is thriving .

The dose was a success. Just be patient and let the meds take it’s course. I used the safe guard 1g packets and used 1 and a half packets for 135 gals I figure with all the rock.

If you have the purple ones, you many want to go even higher.
I used as high as 4mg/gal for 169 hrs (7days) and i am not sure they are gone. I can sill see signs of them in the tank.
FYI all my acros, rbts, other corals and fish were not affected.

Blow 'em up with the double tap. I wouldn't necessarily wait the 8 weeks I did either. I only had that delay because I had to treat for byropsis. Three months on they are honestly truly gone... I'd been fighting those dang things for 4-5 years.

menglish and littlebigreef - Can I get an update on your clove status?

My Battle is now Brown Clove Polyps.

My history: (120gallon display tank)

• I treated successfully for Blue clove polyps in March 2018 using Thomas Labs Fenbendazole, following MaxDraco instructions.
• But in spring of 2019 clove polyps were back. Not Blue, but clove.
• Re-treated Fenbendazole in June 2019, at approx 1.5mg/gal. And Added second treatment of ~1.5mg/gal two days later.
• Punch line, my Non-blue clove polyps never fully died.
• My made up name, I now have "Brown" clove polyps (picts below)

Since then,

• An aptasia eating Filefish didn't touch them
• A Regal Angel didn't touch them
• Twelve emerald crabs didn't touch them
• One Tuxedo Urchin doesn't touch them, although B(rown) CP's are on side of tank Urchin doesn't go

I'm ready to give it another go and I'm looking for collective wisdom.

1. try the Double Tap 2-4 weeks apart
2. up dosage to 4mg/gal
3. perhaps switch from Thomas Labs to Merck Safeguard Goat Dewormer, (10% suspension) Under idea maybe drug itself is slightly ~different?

Otherwise, any other collective wisdom?
Does ANYONE claim to successfully remove Non-Blue Clove Polyps (but same size as BCP's) by Non-Mechanical means?

Free and clear after however long its been... last June/July?

Double tap after 4-6 weeks after initial dose is key especially for systems that are heavily 'infected'.

I wouldn't necessarily up the dosage (IMO). Its about getting them a second time before they can fully reestablish. Kick them while they're down (as it were).
