Hi. I bought an Elos Ph test kit and have followed the instructions exactly. But when I look down into the tube the color is candy apple red. I've done this test several times and it keeps showing red. Red however isn't on the color chart. Can somebody tell me what the ph is for red done with Elos test kit? Thanks in advance.

I've not used that pH kit, but in general I don't think pH kits are worth messing with. If the pH is so far off you'd want to do something, you'd definitely want to get a double check with a meter, and if it is OK, then it was OK before you tested it. :D

Some pH kits may not even be designed for seawater, but don't indicate so.

That's just the thing. I don't know if it's that far off. If I look thru the side instead of thru the top it per instructions it has a reading of 8.2. Also when I used a wider vial instead of the narrow one that came with the kit I got a reading of 8.2. So maybe that's what I should do. Just use a wider vial. If my alk is good, my ph is good right?

Alkalinity is not a perfect indicator of pH.

pH is determined mathematically by the alkalinity and the CO2 level in the water. Many folks have low pH and elevated CO2, but in general, most reef tanks do not "need" to do anything about it, but corals may grow faster if the keep pH higher.

Thanks Randy. My corals are doing great anyway so I shouldn't worry too much about the ph. I need to quit spending so much money on liquid test kits and stressing myself out over nothing!

Good plan!

Happy Reefing. :)
