I really don't understand why people with saltwater aquarium think they are more special then others I have had a 100 gallon and a 20 gallon for over 2 years now . The people I have met don't ever admit there failures. They also act like they have so many connections. It's just a aquarium. I understand its alot of work. For some reason people get it seems jealous of my success. Why dose this happen.

Perfectionist hate to be wrong and 99% of people that see your aquarium don't even know the corals are animals.

Had a Bad week??? You must be Psychic and know people so well. People have a Life and don't sit around waiting for sarcastic postings. We all have failures- its a way of life.
Ever think if you had a more positive attitude, you'd get a more positive response.
Dont be SO special- lets see Y O U R tank. and what's the name of your Reefing book you authored- i'd like to read it.

As in all parts of society, there are some bad apples in the reef hobby, but I've found most reefers to be very sharing and generous people with their knowledge, time, and resources. I'm actually continually impressed with the awesomeness of the reef community. In fact, it's the comradery in the reef community that allows us to truly call it a 'community.' :-)

Hey Frank, how are you doing? Is something bothering you that we can help with. Here at R2R we pride ourselves on being the most family friendly SW forum around. We have gobs of wonderful, friendly, ready to help members here! I certainly try to share my failures up front and center to help people learn from my Idiocracy. Save them the hassle if possible. I spend alot of time working on fish disease and you can find threads all over that forum of both success and failure written by yours truly! I may be well equipped to deal with fish disease etc. But I have a couple threads in the SPS forum seeking help with some pale acros. So again we appreciate your membership and I would love to know if there is something I can help you out with :)

This thread isn't a total waste. Definitely using this gif at work

I rarely entertain posts that look childish or sound trollish but I’m going to be the bigger person here and join the few others in this thread. I have been in the hobby for less than a year and yes I’ve encountered some bad apples but the amount of great people has far exceeded the bad ones. I was helped by strangers both on this forum and in real life.

Sooo with that being said... if there is anything I can help you with let me know and I would also love to see your tank. Maybe start a build thread?

I would say in any and all hobbies .... theres a certain amount of pride and ego to be the best.

The one hobbyist that all other hobbyists look up to feed their self ego.

Be it collecting coins, to building and racing motorcycles, to playing golf, to having the best lawn/garden in the neighborhood..... every hobbyist wants to be elevated as the "best of the best". Someone highly respected and looked up to. Owning that "one thing" that is the holy grail in the hobby.

In achieving a highly respected status, that hobbyist can be be a SNOB or be a humble achiever.

It's all a natural fallout of every hobby when hobbyists all measure their success against what everyone else is doing and achieving.

It's the ultimate prize in Show-n-Tell

Frank, before I started writing this reply, I took the time to read about 5 or 6 of you most recent post's. With all due respect, it seem's you are more intent on starting a fight with this forum than actually contributing something yourself or using the massive amount of information here to your advantage. Now I don't know if you actually intend on doing this, or if you just find it difficult articulating what you want to say in written word's, sometimes it's hard to get your point over online vs face to face, I get that. But to me, this is how some of your posts have come across to me, and likely some others too.

I think, if you took the time to engage with folks on here, in a less confrontational, less condescending way, you may find that you start to meet people with the same interests as you and you may even start enjoying yourself, and I do say this with the utmost respect.

Now to respond to your question; I think their are elitists in every hobby, in every sport, in every job, this would, by proxy include the everyday saltwater aquarium hobbyist, having said that, having been involved in this Hobby for over 25 years on and off I don't think I have ever met someone who was! I have met folks who maybe don't have the same opinion as me, or better equipment, or money to spend on equipment I could never afford, I have also met folks who cant afford what I have, and some maybe will never have the spare income to have the latest and greatest equipment, but I don't think I would calcify either party as elitists, maybe some folks would come to that conclusion, I know I probably would have done as young man, but as I have got older and wiser I began to understand why and how people have what they have and why they have the opinions that they do, and I have found if you respect them just as much as you might respect the guy that has a second hand tank from the used section of the local news paper you are respected back ten fold!

This forum should be a place to share failures and successes a like, so others can be as successful as you say you have been. Maybe something you could do is write a couple of paragraphs on what you have been able to do, with your vast experience over the years so new reefers and old are able to benefit. I'd be happy to help you put something together if you would like! Or at least proof read it.

I think you've been meeting and talking to the wrong people. Most anyone I've talked to, from local shop owners, store staff and just plain old reefers are super eager to help, share and talk about their tanks.

If you have questions on moving to saltwater from fresh, and some of the associated pitfalls of applying one mentality to the other, by all means ask.

If you already know enough to keep tanks going for 2, 3, 4 or more years, find a newbie and help them with some of their questions.

This post really comes full circle.

What are your parameters?

Edit: That's probably only funny if you read through the first page of one of his earlier threads:

I’m just thinking that there can be a lot of frustration in this hobby. Pretty much a given.
Success for some.
Jealousy for others.
I’m NOT going to say there aren’t people in this hobby with bad or “elitist” behavior.
As some people already have said, the nature of this hobby lends itself to such behavior.
However there are many, many more people who elevate and enlighten!

Thank you to those reefers.
