I am trying to set up a system for when I lose power. I want to get a Deep Cycle Battery, Power Inverter and Trickle Charger. I understand all that.

My problem I can't seem to figure out is how does my system know when there is a power lose and kicks on the emergency services like a power head, heater, and airstone??

I have an Apex and have read or heard somewhere if I get a 2nd power bar there is a way for it to know when there is a loss of power. However my modem would lose power so I dont see how this would be helpful because the Apex wouldn't be able to send out a notification to me or anything.

So looking for help with how I can keep the Deep Cycle Battery plugged in and trickle charging and then when a power outage strikes automatically one of my Apex energy bars kicks in and supplies emergency services.

I want a system that works for when I am out of town for 2-3 days and we have a loss of power and I'm not there to manually do anything.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Generator stores have these switches.
If power is down it switches what ever you have setup.
You can always get the battery backups from ecotech or just any computer backup for your pumps.

The new AIMS UL inverters are quite nice. They have a builtin charger, transfer switch, and low wattage consumption when on battery supply. Paired with an AGM and you have a rock solid backup. For the apex they sell a power adapter that you plug into the wall to detect when power goes out so you can program accordingly.

Going a different direction, but how about a whole house generator? That would be able to power your whole house. Talking the possibility of 2-3 days at a time it may be worth it.

Thanks all.

I've looked into the whole house solution and we're looking at about $4k for the size we need for our house. That is on the to do list but we're looking at a few years down the road for that.

I like the idea of the adapter for the apex sensing when power is out that could be useful.

I think to get me by for a year or so I need to go with the deep cycle battery, the inverter, and charger, coupled with this adapter for the apex and then it sounds like a switch is in need from a generator store.

many of us reefers have UPS to keep the modem, router, power head (s) going for hours before the whole thing shut down completely. Hopefully, you would have received the email/txt from the Apex and plan something by then. It is a $100 solution that will last a few years. Well, 1 year at least I think :-)

Problem is my modem is located on 2nd floor of house, which would need a UPS, then I have a switch in the basement that breaks off the Ethernet to my TV and then one to the tanks Apex. The switch would need an UPS, then the apex by tank would bed UPS. So we're looking at like $300 for a year back up. Looking to spend a little bit more for a longer or maybe permanent solution.

OK here is a better solution, maybe. http://www.reeftronics.net/ offer free apex(or a few other controllers) "ping". It basically read some data from your apex to see if you apex is still alive every 10 minutes or so. It will send you an email if the apex does not respond...All you need is a battery or UPS to keep a pump (or pumps) going....until you get home. I have tried reeftronics and it works pretty good.

Oh wow that is a pretty cool solution. This will be great to get me a notification of power outage. So that's my solution for the Apex not being able to send me an alert text.

Now I need to rig up the deep cycle battery, inverter, switch system to power the back up system which I am debating just plugging the apex power bar into so my entire system stays running. I max out at 5 amps for my entire system running at once. So I feel that's very doable.
