I have a 5 gallon quarantine tank running and the heater died. Can I put an Ehiem 300W heater (yes I know it is way, way overkill), and turn it way, way down to work in a pinch?

Yes. Just keep a close eye on it at least for the first few hours.

You could also wrap the nano in a blanket and keep the room warm tonight. The loss of temp will not hurt near as bad as a heater that overheats the water.
