My GSP polyps aren’t opening all the way. Only some of them on the colony are opening and the others aren’t.. does anyone have any idea why this is happening? It’s been going on for weeks. The same polyps open everyday but the others stay inside.

Ok nate, calm down, let figure out what's wrong. Whenever I see a coral is acting up I like to do a water change. Do you have other corals that are doing OK? Have you tested your water?

Pretty common for gsp to be moody from time to time. I have one rock that’s always out no mater what and three frags that occasionally act up and don’t come out for a few days. What’s your water parameters tho? The only reason I dont worry abt them is because all my params are in check.

ive had three different GSP frags. they act up time to time for no reason whatsoever. do a water change like everyone said i wouldnt worry unless other stock is suffering or it goes on for a week

Check your water parameters but also that there’s nothing in the area around the GSP bothering them, like an ‘intruder’ of some sort.

I say this because you said some are opening up, but other’s aren’t

All my other corals are doing fine. It’s just the GSP that I’m having issues with. Are GSP more delicate and fragile than other species? My parameters seem fine!

GSP is actually one of the hardiest species of coral! And it’s okay for corals to be a little unhappy sometimes. It happens to the best of us. It’s a good sign that it comes out a little. Like others mentioned, GSP can sometimes be moody. Try moving it around the tank. If it’s on the left, move it to the right, if it’s in a low flow, move it up to a higher flow area. It’s just looking for it’s place in the world. Happy reefing!

Btw maybe next time try posting in the “reef tank” forums ;) This is for people who go through emergencies like power outages and need advice, get a random crack in their tank that’s leaking everywhere, or crazy situations out of their control.

I’d still check parameters. Like someone else said GSP are hardy. I’ve seen them grow from the bottom of tanks with low light, all the way up the walls to the top and get blasted by light. I once had a gorilla-type crab mow down an entire colony. Can you post better pics and at least parameters? When you say other corals are fine, what kind are they?

Scott he said his parameters are fine ;)

Don't rag on someone for being worried about a coral, we've all been there. One thing I'd do is test for/dose iodine/ide, it is a trace element but is necessary for soft tissue. It can help a lot. Just don't overdose it. I'll also add that when a soft coral/polyps have been closed for a while, taking a Turkey baster and blowing it off a bit could help clear anything that's on it so they open easier. Other than that just give it time, it is an incredibly hardy species.
