Purchased a tank off craigslist. This little guy was in the tank and I refuse to give up on him. I've since separated him from the big clown that was torturing him. I am on a mission to help him make a recovery if possible. He eats like a hog and swims like a maniac. Pls help

Is there a picture?

Can you post pictures of the fish to help us diagnose and recommend treatment?

Trying to upload pic keeps telling me no forum is chosen.

Edit: got it

You can upload a picture right in the thread, click the little picture box next to the smiley face in the tools above the text box, and find your picture that way. That should post it directly in the thread :)

Oh goodness. He is in very very rough shape. He needs to be put into quarantine and treated asap! What are you feeding him? @HotRocks @4FordFamily @Big G @Humblefish
We need as many eyes on this as possible

That little guy is in rough shape. Following and hoping for a good outcome.

Honestly I don’t know that I would remove to a quarantine that just looks like entire body deterioration perhaps the most extreme HLLE I’ve seen. Soaking food in zoecon, feeding lots of nori, and keeping the water pristine gives you the best chance but that fish’s prognosis isn’t good. It’s taken a lot of malnutrition and poor water quality for a long time to lead to the condition of that poor fish...

I don’t think it can be saved, unfortunately — but that’s how I would try. If there is any redness or areas growing on the fish that’s an infection which would require treatment— kanaplex metroplex and furan 2 in quarantine should do the trick.

Agree. I'm torn between starting antibiotics or not. Honestly I think this^^^^ is best you can do right now. Poor little guy.

A wide variety of high quality foods with vitamins could certainly help. A fish "smoothie" made with a wide variety of frozen fish cubes would cover a lot of areas the fish needs: take one cube of each ( and for a Tang make sure to include seaweed cubes and reef mix, etc.) and place into a tupperware container. I use 7-8 different types of cubes like mysis, seaweed, reef mix, brine shrimp, chopped clams, mysis, etc. A large variety is the key to fish health. Allow to slump in the fridge. Mix a bit. Add Zoecon as @4FordFamily has posted. It is specifically formulated for HLLE. You can pour off any excess water if desired. The water can raise nitrates and phosphates in your tank. The mix will stay good in your fridge for a few days.
Good on you for taking on the task to try to save this tang. Nice. ;)

Followed over from the reddit thread, I think you've gotten the best advice so far. The fact he is still eating well is a good sign. Getting away from the clown thats beating him up is great as well.

What equipment do you have in the QT? Have you had saltwater tanks in the past before?

Any update here? Been following since seeing it on the subreddit.
Significant improvement in just a few days

His fins are showing signs of regrowth... hope you can see the yellow in his tail is returning.

Also i can see growth of the fin at the rear of his belly. ( not sure of technical name)

Please keep in mind the right fin and tail were completely gone when I purchased this tank.

The biggest change ive seen so far is this little guy is much more active. He is finally eating seaweed and no longer cowering in the corner

The blue color is also returning all over his body and at the top of his head. Amazed at the progress over the last week.

I will be taking pictures to log this journey. He is looking much healthier than the first day I got him. Wish I had pictures from day one.

Current course of action is a nutrient rich diet, noori, and pristine water conditions.

Should have hlle meds soon

Im a beginner, have some friends and family in hobby that have offered me amazing support and advice

have also read anything and everything I could to prepare for this tank

Those progress pics are great! Glad to see some return to normalcy with his actions.

The best advice anyone gave me, which you have probably heard already, is go watch the 52 weeks of reefing on Bulk Reef Supply's youtube channel. You will get the crash course to reefing in like 15 hours of videos. I know its a lot but its great information.

They're also working on a new series for their BRS/WWC hybrid aquarium system, more in depth analysis on how to sustain a tank but its not complete yet so not helpful for the long run yet.

Another update. Significant improvement over the last few months. Blue tang still going strong ... hard to get a pic because he is very very active

Top pic is updated. Bottom is from October when I picked up the used tank.

Gradually improving week after week. The blue has significantly improved in his face and the base of his tail is getting better.

You can also tell the spot on his back has filled in and his fins have regrown dramatically.
