I just picked up this beauty from my LFS for $80! Only problem is he’s a picky eater... any tips?

I'm willing to risk inserting a shameless plug to help save the fish, as our track record with helping to get finicky eaters eating unmatched. Checkout the searchable dealer map on the "BUY" page at LRSFoods.com and see if you can get some Fish Frenzy®. It has fresh seafood, blackworms, clams, fish eggs and polychaete worms added for finicky eaters.

You could try adding shrimp and frozen simultaneously for a while, and then decreasing the amount of shrimp as he starts to pick at the frozen.

You could also try dropping in a littleneck clam from the supermarket, opened so that he can pick through the course of the day.

Beautiful emperor - I'm diggin' the two blue dots on his forehead!

LRS not a bad idea, live blackworms works well as well— the movement makes them irresistible!

My adult emperor (~12") loves nls pellets (7.5mm ones), clams, seaweed, cobalt jumbo ultra marine pellets and some larger flakes. He chews down a whole clam in one bite! Definitely not picky but tends to ignore small foods like mysis and brine.

Has he grunted for you yet? I can hear mine from across the room. Not sure what he’s saying - feed me, where the babes at, what’s with all these other fish .....
Lol Mine does it all the time. It can be heard on the second floor sometimes. It's crazy.

The larger angel specimens tend to be “set in their ways” as it pertains to diet. Sponge is a natural source they eat a lot of in the wild. They are more difficult to convert to foods we offer in captivity.

Conversely, juveniles and smaller, young adults tend to adapt better to feeding in captivity and quicker. That said, they can be a bit more susceptible to disease.

Some will chow down red nori as well, mine always became as voracious with nori as my tangs!

When mine grunts it sounds a lot like rocks hitting together. First time I heard it I thought, gads, I’ve had an aquascape collapse.

Great price. Hopefully not in a tank with coral as they will pick coral until it has vanished.
I recommend Ocean nutrition Angel/butterfly formula as well as any foods with sponge, nori seaweed, LRS or Rods foods and as an enticer Live or frozen brine shrimp.
Once eating- they are eating machines.

my emperor has been in my mixed reef for like 5 years with no losses - softies, clams, sps, lps. I'd vote to try LRS or clams from the grocery store. Mine also loves sliver sides cut up into small pieces. I think their oily nature triggers fish to eat.

And you can/do get lucky. Until a large leak issue, I had a Majestic angel that bothered nothing
