What would be a good size to purchase one of these? Id prefer a smaller. Will these acclimate well in a bigger tank at 3" or under?

If you prefer smaller get a smaller size

Ok thanks. I keep reading these can be finicky and wild caught. Larger ones won't acclimate to new food well and younger ones are fragile. Info is all over the place.

Yes. Most people prefer larger ones and try getting them on different food over time.

I have never had a problem with tiny Emperors. I buy them as small as I can find them, and raise them to adulthood. Then after a couple of years rehome and start again.

That makes me feel better. I've been reading a few things about them and it had me spooked. The only larger angel I had was a passer which was almost bulletproof.

I've found emperors to be pretty hardy as well. The thing to consider is at a smaller size or any juvi for that matter could take years to transition into adulthood. Some people do enjoy the juvi colors, but for most it's the adult colors that are spectacular. Raising smaller ones is fun and they do seem to turn out less aggressive than getting an adult from the start.

Agree with those above. Get a small one. They are very hardy and acclimate to foods easily. I prefer to see my fish grow up as well. Added benefit of the small ones being substantially cheaper too!

I appreciate it. They don't look too bad but if you search around there's tons of warnings on finickness etc. Yeah there was a $400 difference in price between sizes.

I suggest you look around. NYAquatic regularly has 5" adult coloration specimens for $150 (plus shipping I'd imagine).

I'll def check them out. I have a few local shops that can get them also. That was a liveaquaria cost
