I’ve been having this very irritating issue on a few sps frags. They grow nicely and begin to encrust out on the plug, then for no apparent reason, that tissue bleaches out. This has happened two or three times with the first two pictured frags. I am not sure if the bleached tissue is just washing out and coloring back up, or if it dies and gets encrusted over again. Any thoughts? Third pic is an acro right next to the pink Millie that is encrusting like crazy.

The green acro (first pic) also throws out messentarial filaments after I feed the fish frozen food like clock work. Think this is connected?

Edit: before I get asked...

I see what appears to be 3 healthy corals I dont see any bleaching. New growth is often lighter or different in color. If you are very concerned take a picture and then take a picture the next week if the discoloration has spread to old growth you have a problem but I dont think you do

These bases have stayed white for quite some time, leading me to believe there is no new growth taking place. Though I could be wrong. These frags have been in this tank for a few months and should have much more growth. The original frag tissue/coral of these do look healthy which is what I don’t understand.
all my acros get whiteish bases when encrusting. Its a sign of new growth.

5ppm nitrate and that low Po4 could cause some paling as well. You could bump your Po4 up to .03-.04 and your nitrate up to 15. To do this I'd probably just feed a little more

I’ll retest nutrients today. Those numbers were from last week and I did bump up feeding a little bit. I’ll confirm.

This has happened to me too. It is definitely not new growth, just the base encrusting bleaching and dying off.
This Garf was fully encrusted around the base and onto the rock work and then bleached and died back.
My other more established Garf has done the same thing twice.
It is now slowly recovering.

Were you able to pinpoint the cause?

I believe it was one of two things, or a combination.
I messed with my light schedule around the time it started happening and also I believe that I was adding copper to my display via dodgy source water. I can't be 100% it was either of these two things but since I changed my water provider and left my lights alone things have stopped getting worse and are slowly improving.

I saw this in my tank while it was rebounding from a move. Once it stopped everything started growing normally and I am not sure what it was. But some pieces would show new growth then the new encrusted areas would show white patchy areas in random spots. Then in a few days it would color back and heal. Really odd and I can’t think of any reason for it happening.

I've been noticing messentarial filaments coming from the encrusted tissue on several of these frags. Makes me wonder if chemical warfare is going on, especially with some of the slime getting circulated and touching other frags. I have not been running carbon for about 2 months, so i'm going to bring the reactor back online with only 1 tbsp of rox .8 carbon and see if it helps. Very underdosed to mitigate any rapid stripping of organics
