Who is concerned about the rising energy prices and do you consider to say goodbye to the hobby?

I'm not concerned. I've already downsized to the biggest tank I want to maintain. Of course if T5's go away or there are no affordable/workable options for LED lighting when I need to replace, then that may hinge on leaving the reef hobby.

I still go fishing even if my boat needs a ton of work. I just use the canoe or fish places where a boat is not needed.

I'm more worried about salt becoming hard to find, or rodi filters, or medications. Or for the fact gas is up over $1.20 per gallon the last year. The miniscule amount of electricity the tank uses compared to a electric furnace, oven, microwave. Heck a TV uses 100 watts. Now water/sewer prices are what needs to change, that will bankrupt someone making ro

Germany electric prices just doubled since they are no longer buying natural gas from Russia. I’m not quite sure why they thought it was a good idea to shut down their existing fossil fuel plants not that long ago.

It's getting bad. I want to try and get off the grid. Maybe a combination of solar and wind (do they make tiny wind turbines that aren't bird killers? That would solve electricity. The money I save on that will help me pay for the gas in my car and natural gas furnace in the winter. If all goes well maybe I can cover everything to electricity. It is a bad time right now everywhere, that's for sure.

Because coal is more expensive, makes a lot more pollution than natural gas, and they were getting old. Now shutting down their nuclear power planets, that was pretty dumb.

I think everyone is realizing it's a bad idea to become reliant on other countries for vital products. When the entire world needs something at the same time (or a huge section of the world) it's really bad when you aren't self reliant or can't become self reliant really fast. :-(

None of these things are running as much as your reef tank.

This is from a recent BRS video on it. These are the calculations for a 25 gallon all in one!
In my city I pay roughly 4$ for 1000 gallons. According to my napkin math I use maybe 1200 gallons a year for my reefer 250 factoring in RO waste water, and ATO and water changes.

Energy Independence. We can supply all our needs, reduce our cost and supply other markets. Gonna keep on Reefing. While we are at it, Open Hawaii, a sustainable fishery, for the ornamental trade.

The nat gas is still flowing just fine from Russia to Germany. The price increases are due to speculation and the fact that Germany realized that having their nat gas reserves only filled to 10% capacity was a bad idea. Now they plan to get to 90% capacity by the end of the year.....increasing demand at the same time their is panic over a potential disruption.

I'm glad I pay less than 0.05 for my KWH!

It might stall me from buying anything new but won't effect what I already own. The 7% inflation was bad enough. Now with gas prices going up so much everything will inflate even more.

If anything it would force me into spending money on consolidating several smaller frag tanks into larger frag tanks for efficiency sake.

But your electric furnace is 5k plus watts that will use much more kw over a year than most tanks, if you use a/c then way, way more unless you have a super energy efficient energy star house, then if you have electric hot water at another 2500-5k watts, oven at a few k watts. I'm not worried about a 200 watt heater, 100-200 watt+ lights, and a return pump of 60 watts. The heater and lights in the tank don't run constantly either

Glad I have natural gas for all of those!
(Except the AC or course)

I know my AC is expensive to run, but it's also ~20 years old. My electric is ~$20-30 more in the warm months because of it.

That is why many more in the US heat the house and water with natural gas compared to electric.

I will never buy a place without gas. Not worth it.

I’m concerned, but I think now is a good time to consolidate. Focus all your energy on a few tanks. This will save so much money, time, and headache for a lot of reefers. :-)
