Hello, so I am new to reefing and have a Red Sea 260 with bottom sump so around 55 gal. I am wanting to get an engineer goby as I am not able to have an actual eel. I also want to put a scolly and potentially a clam in the tank however I have heard that the goby might just try and bury them in sand and kill them and therefore I would need to decide which one I would rather have. Does anyone have any experiance with these as I would love to hear how other people get on and what they avoid putting in because of the goby. On top of that will a goby shrimp pair be okay with the engineer and if yes is there a prefered way to introduce them for instance engineer in first or goby/shrimp in first or both in at the same time? Any advice would be great as would love to have a pair on engineer gobys in my tank but want to get it right.

I have a pair in my 150 gallon. Got them when they looked like tadpoles. Their now 14 months and about 8 inches. They don’t bury anything. Just clear out the sand by their rock. Mine are out all day and most of the night. I don’t have any smaller fish like gobies but do have shrimps which they ignore

thanks for that. will try them out. I did put my rockwork on about 1inch of sand. Is this going to be an issue they are quite big pieces and no more than an inch of sand

Yes, this could be an issue. While mine do not pick up and drop sand all over like some gobies, they do clear out areas under and around rocks to make they're lair. I have three main rock structures I made as tripods so they can't fall or tumble. You'll want to make sure your rock structures are secure and I'd twist them down into the sand bed.

This is the current scape, what do you reckon? I can’t really twist it in as it’s all glued and like one solid unit
