I recently made a DIY HOB refugium that seems to be working well. My only concern is if the chaeto will get enough light…

Very hard to tell under heavy blue light in pic, but best is a red light and I would suggest looking at the ChaetoMax light from Innovation marine

I got one of these last year, and it grows chaeto like crazy. I pull out and discard about 75% of my chaeto every other week.

Would I absolutely need a chaeto light? I don't have much room for one at the moment. Would the light it gets from the AI Prime surfice?

Lights designed for refugiums are usually heavy in the red spectrum. The blue spectrum of your tanks lights probably won't be as effective. The only way to tell is to try it, I guess.

As others have mentioned about needing a more red spectrum- if you can't get a different light, I would try putting the refugium on the back so that you can get it closer to your display light if possible :)
