Entering the Reef World

Yes, but tanks come in different shapes and sizes. You cant go by gallon capacity. You need the complete dimenrions. LxWxH

Standard 55 or 75. So 48x13x21 for a 55 or 48x16x21 I believe for 75.

Ok... so if I'm shopping for a light for the 55, I want a light that will provide a 48x13 spread at the bottom of the tank. Also, the light will hang between 6 and 8 inches above the tank, so I'd want something that can provide 8-10k lumens at a height of 30 inches above the tank bottom.

WOW; that seems to need so TLC... to say the least. Are you ready to put the hours in?

Leaning towards no. A friend of mine who is big into the discus world has offered to help me source the materials needed to switch my current 46 gallon bow to a salt tank. Seems my best bet so far. Then I can slowly accumulate quality used equipment.

That would be my choice too; transition your existing tank.

Just sold off all my discus to transition to reef. I thought that nice chunk of change would get me a great start. I was able to get some of the main components but not those $$ go fast lol

That tank doesn't look very good. The glass on the top picture looks like its starting to separate on the right side? Hard to tell though.

The sump area is having some issues too. Salt creep is ruining the stand and doors.

Settled on reinventing my current freshwater 46 Bowfront.

Decided upon:

Continuous siphon overflow box
Small 10-15 gal sump
HOB skimmer

Undecided:

Lighting- currently like the Fluval Sea marine and Reef LED fixture due to its programmability. I'm thinking two lights for full coverage.

Livestock- definitely clowns, lawnmower blenny, maybe an unknown type angel

Corals- softies, And other easier varieties GSP, mushrooms, etc

For lighting if you venture into LEDs, among the popular choices are: Current Orbit Marine IC Pro (don't go with the regular line as they are too weak), Chinese Black Box (ie Mars Aqua), Reef Breeders (similar to the Chinese Black Box), and the higher end lights from Kessil, AI and Ecotech Marine.

As for fish, the clowns and the blenny would be great for that tank as for the Angel, the only one I would think about for that tank would be a Cheurbfish (aka Pygmy Angel). Be aware that all Pygmy/Dwarf Angels have the potential to be coral nippers. I have a Coral Beauty Dwarf Angel in my 90 gallon and so far it has been pretty well behaved with my Euphyllia frags. I have seen it take a couple of test nips at the coral (Hammer and Frogspawn) when it hasn't fully opened up for the day but it doesn't seem to like it much and moves on to algae grazing pretty quickly.

The currents look nice but they d be a little out of my price range for two, which I'm assuming I d want due to the tank width and height. The Chinese black box lights intrigue me but I d like something I don't have to hang, something free standing is ideal.

Running these on my 75. The price is for both and also comes with the wave pump hub. I'm running two of the wave pumps as well, all from same controller

Oh nice! How do you like it? Any pics?
No coral yet but the lights look great IMO. Obviously they are not top end, but not Chinese junk either. According to the specs should be plenty of par for low and medium light coral. I actually just added an Orphek UV bar to go along with them for some more "pop/color" during the day

Pic is with 100% blue, 20% white and I think around 20% red and green

Wow nice. Will they do a natural daytime white and all actinic?

Yes have full control of R,G,B,W

You choose your daylight spectrum, sunrise/sunset spectrum and moonlight spectrum. Once you set your photo period it has an auto ramp up and down of 1.5 hours then a moonlight period as well as a lights off period

I also really like the fact that I can control my wave pumps from the same remote.
