I decided to go ahead and get this thread started mainly because 80 lbs of the 130# of rock that I ordered from Reef Cleaners showed up today. I don't even have my tank yet, but I could not resist playing around with the rock a little just to see what I am going to have to work with.

I should probably back up and talk a little bit about my background in the hobby. I have been keeping aquariums for about as long as I can remember, but had my first saltwater tank and reef in the early nineties. I have kept everything from discus, S.A. Cichlids, African Cichlids, tetras, you name it I probably had it. I worked for a LFS for many years as a part-time gig to help finance my hobby and I learned a lot about the business side of things from that experience. I'll throw in a few photos of some of the freshwater fish that I have kept over the years....

I am an entomologist and I have always been kind of a nerdy geek..lol.. I love taking photos of insects and I am much better at that then getting good photos of my reef.

I sometimes travel a lot with my work and this has been the biggest obstacle for me to overcome in the hobby. The past five years or so I have been splitting my time between research sites in MA, and then back home at the lab here in Delaware. I used to be a fairly active member of the Delaware Reef Club until I started all the travel for work. I had to take down my reef tank back in 2011 as I just could not maintain it being away from home so much. Selling off all of my fish and coral was hard. This purple sebae and the clowns were probably my favorite..

So I kept my 95 gallon wave tank and got the bug to set it back up sometime in 2014. I have had it operating mainly as a FOWLR with a few corals thrown in here and there. I acquired a few fish that have now been in this tank for close to 4 years. I will be transferring them into the 180 once it is stable and ready for fish. My melanurus wrasse is probably 6" and he is fat!! I think he is beautiful..

My tang is not one you see in the LFS everyday. I still am not 100% sure on its correct ID, but I believe it is Ctenochaetus cyanocheilus

I also have a small Rock Beauty angel that has been with me for almost a year.
_EMA6803.JPG

Both the melanurus and the rock beauty could use the space that the larger tank will provide.

I wanted to stick to a rough budget of around $6,000 for the tank and equipment, but I want to make sure that I have everything that I need. I settled on a 180 because I knew I could fit it nicely in my home office and that was where my husband agreed I could set the tank. The tank is being built by Cadlights and it will have a 36" tall white mirror finish stand. The tank will have 1 center overflow and a 50g sump.

This photo of their 165 is close to what mine will be except for the depth.

My equipment list:
Apex Controller
Aquamaxx ConeS Q-3 skimmer
AI Hydra 26 HD x 4
Ice Cap ATO
Jaebo RW-15 x 3
Ozotech Poseidon 220
Jabeo 36W UV

I will have 130 lbs of Reef Cleaners Florida base rock to aquascape with. I chose this rock because they say it is free of organics and won't leach a ton of phosphates like other types of dry rock can. I will find out. It is definitely nice rock based on the 80 lbs I got today. My plans are to start this reef off as a LPS softy dominate tank and later on I may add some SPS. My hubby will be installing two 20 amp dedicated circuits so the tank will have its own electrical. He will also be installing a drain line and a separate PVC line running from my water station in the garage to my office where the tank will be. He will run the PVC under the house in the crawl space. No more bucket hauling!! We still have to work out the details on how this is going to work, but the idea is when I want to do a water change I can drain straight into the line and then just hook a pump up to the other line and pump the salt water back into the tank.

Ok here are the photos of the rock I got today. I am planning 2 islands with lots of open swimming space for the fish. I have 50 more lbs of rock coming which should be plenty to get the look I am going for.

The blanket is folded to roughly the foot print of the tank. I was just playing around with the rock a little just to see how it would fit together. I am planning a nice recliner and reading lamp opposite the tank once my hubby moves his weight bench..lol..
_EMA6841.JPG

I should also have an awesome view from my desk..

Ok, I think this is plenty long enough to get this started. I will have more photos and an update once my tank arrives.

My husband and I have kept a lot of the same fish as you. Currently have Mbuna Cichlids and fancy goldfish besides our nano salt tank. Your pictures of the insects are phenomenal!!! Your pictures of the fish aren't bad either, lol. I will follow along with your build as I am doing my own 180 :)

Thank you cycled :)

I am glad you are following!! It will be nice to watch our 180's grow.

I also got the last 50 lbs of rock that I ordered. Reef Cleaners gave me some really nice rock!! I am very happy with the pieces that they selected for me. These photos should give you a good idea of what I have to work with. I am hoping my tank will be here by next Monday at the latest so I can get this build started...

I found out tonight that my tank will be shipping on Monday 12/11. I hope I can have water and rock inside by Christmas. I got my qt down from the attic and I will give it a good washing and maybe get it in place this weekend. My dh has everything he needs to add my dedicated outlets so he is going to get that done in the next few days. We might start working on running the plumbing for my WC drain and the line from the water station in the garage. I have everything I need to set up automatic water changes on this tank if I want to. I may do that down the road, but for now I am happy that I won't need to haul any buckets.

I am doing some serious thinking about my stock list and the order I will want to add them. This is more complicated because I have 6 fish in my 95g that I need to transfer over at some point. I want to do this right the first time!!

Not much happening today as the weather is cold and snowy so we decided running pvc under the house can wait a few days. I did put some biological media in a bag and dropped it in the back of my 95g to seed. I will need this in a few weeks for my qt tank. My dh agreed that we should purchase a generator to protect the animals in my tanks. I am super happy about that as it has always been a worry. We are going to get some estimates for a whole house unit in the next few weeks.

I spent some time practicing my photography skills on the tank. I swear my angel never stops swimming and makes it super hard to get a good shot. I did get some shots showing the many test corals I added to see which ones would be safe with the rock beauty. Thus far she has only eaten chalice corals, but she is still small. I have had her for almost 1 year and I think she has grown maybe an inch. Enjoy the photos. I still need to learn how to get better shots.

Great Pictures! We are debating a whole house generator also. Not sure if we should put one in this house because this is not our forever home. But then we keep going back to realistically it will be another 10-15yrs before we build our dream retirement home and a lot can be lost between now and then.

I have been putting some thought into my fish list for this tank. This is what I have come up with so far in the order and groups they will be added. * means a fish I already have. Of course this list is subject to change if the availability of the fish is lacking. This is the part of starting a new tank that I hate because in my mind a tank is not really mature until it hits 1-2 years, but if you wait to add certain fish you may end up with aggression issues. I love leopard wrasse, but they do much better in older tanks so I will probably hold off until the 1 year mark.

All fish will be quarantined and treated with coppersafe/prazipro before being placed into the display tank. I am debating whether I should put my current fish through qt again mainly because I am planning a PBT. I did qt them originally and gave them 2 rounds of prazi, but did not treat with copper. I did not or have not ever seen any signs of ich or velevt. This was 4 years ago for my tang and wrasse, and 1 year for the rock beauty. Please comment and give me your thoughts on this list and my stocking plans.

Group 1
Gramma loreto x 3
Cryptocentrus cinctus

Group 2
Hemitaurichthys polylepis x 3

Group 3
* Halichoeres melanurus
Paracheilinus carpenteri
Cirrhilabrus lubbocki

Group 4
* Holacanthus tricolor
Centropyge loricula
Centropyge potteri

Group 5
* C. cyanocheilus
Acanthurus leucosternon
Zebrasoma scopas

at the one year mark I may add 2-3 leopard wrasse and I will have 1-2 diamond gobies also.

Yea my dh and I will probably retire in this house. We built it in 1996 and there are so many good memories. It is bigger than we need now that our children are grown and gone, but we just put a new roof on it and have been upgrading stuff over the past 5 years. How is your build coming along?

Lovely build thread so far.Your photos are remarkable. As for the stocking plans I would be cautious about adding the various Angel fish.Sometimes they develop a taste for corals.

Thank you. Glad you are following.

Yes, I agree angels can sometimes be a risk. That is why I have been experimenting with my current rock beauty to see which corals he goes after. I know this could change over time as the fish matures. I will just limit my corals to those that the fish leave alone.

Thanks!

I laugh the way it's looking our retirement home is going to be bigger then our current small home but it's going to be on a lake and we want enough room for when people come visit. Plus the all important fish room/basement! The build is waiting for the tank, lol. I did get two fish in quarantine tank today and have rocks cooking.

That makes perfect sense to me about wanting room for visitors and then of course the fish stuff!!! I joke with my husband that we don't need two guest bedrooms and one of them should be my new fishroom lol,,, I always wished we would have went with a basement, but I guess compromises are apart of life.

You are a step ahead of me having fish in qt already. What did you get?

Transitioning to male Bartlett's Anthias and a Copperband Butterfly. I'm really hoping with cooking the rocks that we have a short cycle on the big tank once it arrives and we can get these guys in there right away. They will be about 5 weeks in QT when the tank is tentatively scheduled to arrive. My husband really wanted a Bartlett so he requested one to be ordered and it came a little sooner then expected but really only by a week or two.

I just received confirmation that my tank shipped out yesterday!! So hopefully by Monday at the latest I will have it in house and on the stand ready to be plumbed. Maybe just maybe I will have sand, rocks, and water in by Christmas

YAY!!!!! I'm so happy for you. I can't wait to see it all set up. Your tank will have to tide me over until I get mine :)

My hubby made the holes in the wall for my dedicated outlets tonight. He is going to run the wire tomorrow. I got my quarantine tanks in place. The one on top is for fish the bottom for corals. I still need to clean that bottom tank I just wanted to make sure it was going to fit on the stand. will probably order my first group of fish next week.
