So I used epoxy on my corals and my skimmer is going nuts. I was expecting this and thought it would calm down after a few hour or day max. But it’s been over a day and still going crazy. I took the collection cup off since it continually overflows. It’s been running but won’t go down. Any suggestions? Please don’t tell me to use vinegar. LOL it was older epoxy night I add too.

Using epoxy on your corals.. in what manner? A few drops to hold a frag to a rock? What kind of epoxy? Corals still happy?

I use superglue gel, or specifically packaged reef glue, in my tank. I've used several different kinds of epoxies, in and around my tanks over the years, but never put them in the water until it was cured.

My first impulse, any time I know I've got something undesirable in my water, is to start up a reactor full of GAC, and prepare to do a water change.

I had a zoa colony that loved this one spot but I couldn’t get it to stay. So used the epoxy to adhere to the rock. It was a good chunk of epoxy. Unfortunately, I’m out of gfo at the moment. I thought a water change was my next step. Just didn’t want to go through all the hassle if people had experienced it go back to normal in a certain time frame. I replaced the carbon hoping that would help. But didn’t.

Unfortunately, I’m out of gfo at the moment.

I mentioned GAC... Granular Activated Carbon. Much more variable in the 'stuff' it will absorb than GFO. Sounds like you've already added Carbon.

Yeah, I'd probably move on to a water change.

I wouldn't worry too much about foaming skimming until over a week. It's not a big deal, just let it foam. Chemiclean also foams a lot. I would only start adding carbon or additional W/C if the coral appears to be impacted - that is closed up or acting abnormally.

What about my nutrient maintenance while the skimmer is not skimming?

Just cut back on feeding. Fish will be fine even without food for quite a long time. Don’t have to go 0 food, but maybe half.

Epoxy usually means a week of no skimming. I shut my skimmer down for seven days when I use epoxy. I also take that time to switch out my carbon and GFO.

You talking the 2part epoxy that you mix and it hardens into a plastic?

My skimmer goes nuts for awhile as well.

I just assume the glue compound is bonding with organics and getting out of the system.... it might be a good thing.

At least you know your skimmer is detecting bad stuff in the water and working hard to clean it out :)

So I say, "LET HER RIP!"

I have not experienced this, using several reef safe epoxies. one is instant ocean hold fast, another Aquaforest epoxy, and a couple others. The key is to use a small amount of epoxy in conjunction with super glue.

Pull the skimmer drain plug and just ride it out. Takes about +/- a week for it to calm down. Last time I used 1/2 stick to mount multiple frags and it cleared up on its own.

Use this opportunity to do a water change through the skimmer. Use a tube to direct the skimmer overflow into a bucket and add new saltwater to make up what's being removed. I do this whenever I use chemiclean or anything else that will cause my skimmer to go nuts.

Just did a 10% water change and it did the trick. Made thank God. Thought that thing would never stop going crazy. Thanks for all your help guys!!!
