In the next couple weeks I'll be starting a new 500G build in my home, which will include approximately another 300 gallon capacity in my basement for the sump.

My chief concern is the return - what's the best way to have a second pump hooked up as an automatic failsafe should the primary fail?

You could always just run dual return pumps. Should one fail you would would still have flow into display.

Here's a good example of how you could do it.
100 gallon sump

Been a little bit of a busy day, had to do a complete brake job on my Dad's truck, than a co-worker called about replacing a turn signal switch, and was finally able to finish a few thing in the room... it will be worth it in the end!

Return pumps laid out and mounted.

Added these rubber feet as part of the isolation, will add 4 Sound Dampening Pad from BRS under plywood also.

Connected... used 45 degree coupling as much as I could...

Had to use the heat gun on the PVC from the bulkhead as the stock tank is at a bit of a angle.

will add a slotted piece of PVC to pull right from the bottom.

only one pump will run at a time, other is a cold standby.

Maybe @143MPCo will chime in with more
Details.

...I have a 2nd pump but, it's not an "automatic" cut-over, more of a cold-standby that I can turn on manually or remotely if one fails... you can see from the attached images above how I set it up... I'm testing a float switch program via my apex to turn on the standby... the issue is I need a need a pair of motorized PVC gate valve that can open and closed with logic provided by the apex programming.

This is what it looks like:
