I need a list of equipment to give my wife. Its my birthday in 10days. She wants to know what to get me. Reef stuff duh! But i need equipment that is decent, but not going to break the bank. I am starting a 55G from scratch. What are some things i can tell her? I am going to have a sump set up . I need a skimmer, powerheads, a return pump, lighting for coral and a heater(one with a built in thermometer).

Just so everybody knows i plan to have the skimmer in my sump. I have a 3/4 in overflow down tomy sump with the skimmer then a refugium then a return pump back to the display tank. Do i need one or two powerheads?

Actually look at the new jebao rw series for power heads as they are a few bucks more but are way better IMO then the wp series. They also have a DC pump that you can use for a return pump that are very quiet and adjustable. Don't know much about the skimmer line from them but they look good also you can look at reef octopus line for skimmers. Heater for that size tank I like the Cobalt neo-therm heater and I would run 2 smaller units incase 1 gets stuck on but they come with built in temp and have safety features that shut them down if run dry. Lighting is a touchy subject so I will leave that to others to throw out recommendations.

+1 on RW series. They provide a much gentler flow where the rp is a fire hose.

Personally, I would give her a list of a lot of small things leaving you to buy just the skimmer, return pump and lights. She will feel like she is giving you more and if she is like my wife will not understand how a skimmer can possibly cost that much. :)
