Equipment Prices

awesome thread

Nothing is worth what you paid for it brand new unless its still sealed and in a unopened package... when ever I sale anything I do a quick search for the going rate on the same exact product used thru ebay and here and make it OBO.

Well I hope no one complains about my prices on my for sale ad I think I priced everything more than fare I will say though what bothers me is when your selling things no older than 6 months at a good price and people still low ball

I think low balling is the issue here. If you set it at what your willing to take (what its actually worth) youll never get it. So the higher OBO price gives wiggle room. I had a reefer ask me to drop the price of a multi branch frag from $25 to $20 and i was like ok. Then he asked me to drop it off to him 35+ miles away lol. And mind you the frag if he bought from a store would have been well over $75 out here in So cali! On top of that i get the line well its only $5 when they want a reduction but when you turn around and say if its only $5 then pay it now its just not $5 lol

Bad Craigslist Story:

TL:DR - Don't buy things at high prices that are used.

Just recently during my big move - I'd thought about picking up a 210 gal. glass tank, w/stand off a guy on Craigslist, he wanted $650.

I show up, start taking a look at the tank/stand, and immediately notice some issues. Start talking to him some more, and he begins telling me all the things he purchased for the tank that were used, including the tank itself. He was new to the hobby, just 6 months, and didnt know any better.

Turns out the original seller just robbed him for 800 dollars on this very 210 gal tank, which turned out to be close to 3 years old. The original seller then went further and continued to sell him all this other used equipment for a total of $4k. All after this new-guy drove close to 140 miles to pick the garbage gear up.

The new-guy probably lost close to $3k on all the crap that any experienced reefer would know was antiquated technology.

Just imagine the cognitive dissonance this guy must have had after realizing how much he spent for garbage, only to get out of the hobby after 6 months. What's worse is that he was trying to offload all this garbage equipment at the price he purchased.

There's a sucker born everyday.

This is something I saw on CL earlier this year. Kinda long, but I tend to agree with a lot of it.

Yes, I know you spent a bucket of cash to get yours, but this is RESALE. And it's craigslist....the BARGAIN-hunter's market. Aquariums/fish tanks do NOT hold a high resale value. Therefore, for those of you who are trying to sell USED aquariums on CL and NOT getting your (often) exorbitant asking prices - here's a simple, FAIR guide to pricing: And because many of you don't know or need to find out exactly what size your tank is, here's a calculator: http://animal-world.com/encyclo/inform ation/calculate.htm AQUARIUMS: Glass If it's a year old or UNDER - $2.00 - $3.00 per gallon. If it's OVER a year old - $1.00 per gallon. Hexagons - $2.00 or less/gallon. BowFronts - $1.50 - $2.00 per gallon (depending on condition) AQUARIUMS: Acrylic If it's a year old or UNDER - $1.50 - $2.50 per gallon. If it's OVER a year old - $1.00 per gallon. Hexagons - $1.50 or less/gallon. BowFronts - $1.50 - $2.00 per gallon (depending on condition) STANDS & CANOPIES: $1.00 per gallon of aquarium the stand holds. (REAL wood - add another $.50 to $1.00 depending on CONDITION) $.50 - $.75 per gallon of aquarium the canopy covers. (REAL wood - add another $.50 to $1.00 depending on CONDITION) GLASS TOPS and PLASTIC HOODS: 25% - 40% of retail LIGHTING: WITH newer bulbs: Incandescent - $5.00 (usually only 10 gallons or less are incan's) Fluorescent - $10.00 per foot Compact Fluorescent - $20 - $30 per foot (based on condition of housing, cord) Halide & Specialty - 50% of retail for ballasts; you should buy NEW bulbs unless they are evidently lightly used. REALLY High-end Fluorescent lighting - 60% of retail W/O bulbs or OLD bulbs: Incandescent - Free Fluorescent - $7.00 per foot Compact Fluorescent - $15 - $20 per foot Halide & Specialty - 50% of retail for ballasts; you should buy NEW bulbs unless they are very evidently lightly used. REALLY High-end Fluorescent lighting - 40% of retail ACCESSORIES: Saltwater - i.e. - protein skimmers, powerheads, wave-makers, chillers, etc....50% - 65% of retail (UNDER 1 year of use) Saltwater - i.e. - protein skimmers, powerheads, wave-makers, chillers, etc....25% - 40% of retail (OVER 1 year of use)Freshwater - 25% of retail (regardless of age - very easily replaced) GRAVEL: Natural colors - .15 - .20 cents per pound (clean) Other colors - .05 cents per pound HEATERS: UNDER a year (of use) old - 50W - $2 100W - $4 150 - 200W - $6 250 - 300W - $10 OVER a year old - free (heaters aren't trustworthy enough after a year of use to justify $$) FILTERS - UNDER a year old - 50% of retail OVER a year old - 25% of retail THINGS TO CONSIDER: An empty aquarium is ONLY an aquarium. ***** ONLY when full of livestock (that is included in the sale) is a tank considered a SALT or FRESH aquarium. There is NO SUCH THING as an EMPTY saltwater or freshwater aquarium. It is JUST an aquarium. ****If you have the EQUIPMENT, ACCESSORIES and /or LIVESTOCK for a SALTWATER hobby, then it is a "SALTWATER AQUARIUM SET-UP." ****If you have the EQUIPMENT, ACCESSORIES and /or LIVESTOCK for a FRESHWATER hobby, then it is a "FRESHWATER AQUARIUM SET-UP." REHOMING LIVESTOCK: Check local prices before you buy someone's critters. Often, buying livestock from a private party is better - especially if they have had (it) for a while w/o problems. MISC.: Chips, cracks & leakage are all signs of wear and reduce the prices significantly. Water marks, discolorations, scratches (esp. on acrylic) and hard-water deposits are usually cosmetic. Because many can be removed with effort, they need not affect price. Accessories are always great to 'throw in' as a bonus when buying a tank, but pricing everything, stating 'will not separate' and expecting a quick sale - not good. Not many people are not going to use all YOUR stuff if they have other ideas for THEIR new tank. OK, so this is JUST a guide for SELLING your tank(s) and is intended to give a starting point for pricing it (them). I've sold MANY aquarium very quickly under these parameters. You should do well, too, if you don't get greedy. And buyers? There will be exceptional SET-UPS out there and what you ultimately pay will depend on you, but this (hopefully) gives you a 'ballpark' idea of what you can expect. Happy Fish-keeping, everyone!

lmccluer I didn't have the patients to read it all, but I did pick up the line ...

I don't know about you, but I want to know what the tank was used for before it was emptied.
A tank is not a tank.
If it was a freshwater tank there is a very good possibility that copper was put in it to treat a disease.
I would not buy that tank for a Reef tank just for that reason there.

many things declince rather quick, but your mp60 exampe is a tough one.. those vortech pumps hold value really well.. everyone wants them. prices of used equipment wouldn't be as high if people weren't willing to pay, more people willing to pay for used equipment means that you can re-sell things at a higher price.. if it hasn't sold in a week, lower the price.. that's how a market works ;)

Totally agree with this statement, we as Marine Hobbyist are as bad as Junkies on Crack. We may not have GAS $ but we sure find a way to Buy a $10 Frag.

Supply and Demand is a BIG BIG Factor here. with the New Craze in Technology, Reefers wanna Try out the Newer Equipment (leds, vortechs, skimmers, automaters, etc), so an Already Ridiculous Retail Price, marked Down ONLY $30 dollars does Encourage the hobbyist to pull the Trigger and make the used purchase

IMO and IME as I too have paid some Crazy High Prices on a USED Item

Sacohen, I agree with you, I guess I didn't remember reading that. If you are buying a used tank or anything to put in it, you do need to make sure if it's intended fir a reef setup, that it never had copper in it. However, you know as well as I do, that people can neglect to remember that they put copper meds in a tank.

Here is a great example of insane pricing on used equipment I saw this morning.

"Up for sell 2x 1050 Hydor Koralia Circulation pump, very good condition just used 4 months, comes with original packing. Asking $80 shipped for both. Buyer pay the paypal cost."

I felt it was too crazy, and was honestly worried that someone new would jump on it thinking they were getting a good deal, so I posted the following.

"Dude, I can get the same price off of Amazon, with free shipping, I think you need to lower the price a bit."

I realize it's less than cool to post something like that but come on full bust out retail on used equipment and you pay the fees!! Not to mention these are low end pumps, they should loose value hand over fist.

Slightly OT, but not.

I'm looking for a used 20 long or 29 gallon tank to set up as a sump/fug.

What is a good price?
I found a 29 for $50 on craigslist.

Is that good?

I will sell you a 30g high, built black wood stand, overflow, sump, return pump with a scwd and spray bars for $50

you can buy new tanks 55g and under at petco for $1 per gallon... they run the sale every month or 2

if you want to take a drive to palm coast in a couple weeks I will give you a 20 long lol

I agree totally .
I would rather pay $50-100 more for new unused than get a year old supposedly lightly used

That's honestly fine with me considering I buy most things new, it's good to know it holds it's value if I ever want to sell. I do agree that in every other hobby prices drop fast. Like cars, as soon as you drive it off the lot it losses value. I also think people ask a lot to leave room for bartering. If there asking $50 off the new price they might be willing to do $150 off new price you just need to offer.

So you're saying an mp10 should sell for $23 used?

no. im saying I wouldnt pay much more than that for it.
look at it like this retail - $200 new in box with warranties, used $175 open used wet damaged berrings ned replaced housing cracked who knows what it went threw...... then you have to think $200 retail means around $110 or less wholesale, if I wanted one and was looking for one I wouldnt pay more than around $50 used or just get one new for the $110

if someone is taking down there setup and dont want to deal with parting it out or someone is tired of trying to sell something they give me a call and i will come pick it up for about .10 on the dollar. you wouldnt believe the things I get.
actually my current setup was bought for $0.10 on the dollar. I bought a 180rr complete setup for $200.....
