I currently have a 5 gal tank but am upgrading to a 10 gallon. I was wondering about a protein skimmer/auto top off, are they necessary/helpful? Is there any other equipment that would be useful I currently just have the basics, light, heater, filter, pump
thank you!

I'm not a nano tank guy, but the small water volume makes it difficult to keep parameters stable. I'd say you should do whatever is needed to ensure tank stability.

Ato would help keep water more stable and I think protein skimmers are also something to have... don’t get me wrong you can get by without either of these but it does make things easier. Things change quick with a nano I believe both of those will help keep things more stable.

I have a nano tank myself, a 29 gallon. I’m using the hob filter, lights, and heater. My tank is going strong for 8 months so far with softies, LPS, and SPS corals. So, I would say it is not necessary to have a skimmer, but be prepared to do weekly water changes which isn’t much work for a small tank. :)

I have a IM10g and an ATO is definitely helpful. If you keep up with water changes then IMO a skimmer isn't as important on a 10g nano. Good luck!
