Equipment recommendations for a large SPS tank

What I think you could get by with is just 4 3 ft t5 bulbs and 3 pendants. Put two 3 ft t5 bulbs on the front of the tank along the length, and two on the back along the length. Just use a retro fit kit, with three foot reflectors. You could use 8 3ft bulbs and stagger the reflectors to cover the entire seven feet, 4 on front and four on back (2 extending from center and one extending from each outside edge).

As far as the lighting schedule you are spot on...except I use ATI blue plus bulbs instead of actinics so I can get some usable light in my tank by still a nice blue color. You can use different color bulbs to completely customize your dusk dawn effect, I personally like the blue + look. The schedule is like

T5s turn on
Two hours later halides turn on
Four hours later halides turn off
Two hours later t5s turn off

Or
First t5s turn on
Hour later next t5s turn on
Hour later halides turn on
Four hours later halides turn off
Hour later one set t5s off
Hour later last t5s off

Add in whatever moon lighting you want but they are mostly for viewing purposes and if nobody is around when they are on you don't need them. Coral grows mostly when the lights are off, so I don't use moonlights.

I don't think t5s penetrate past 24 inches of water very well, this is where you would need halides to get light all the way to the bottom... either 250 w or 400w, the color spectrum would be up to you but I'd reccomemd one of these three bulbs (radium 400w 20k, xm 250w 15k, or Phoenix 14k 250w). The 400w radium is still hands down the best bulb for sps, you run it on an hqi ballast and it is beyond compare. LEDs are nice but if I was a company building an sps dominated system from the ground up, I personally would not choose any led fixtures on the market yet as I don't think they are fully dialed in to grow a full blown acro tank. In about three more years, they will be tested and redone enough for me personally to trust them. There are exceptions to the rule, but like I said earlier most of the best sps tanks you see are either mh, t5, or a combo of both.

What would be the difference between the 250W and 400W for the coral, just more light? More penetration? Why do you say the radium is the best for sps?

For the halides, I've found this. What are your thoughts here? How far off the water should it be?
Aquarium Supplies, Reef Tank Supplies, Saltwater Aquariumow high off the water will the actinic need to be? If it's lower than the halides, wont light from the halide hit the top of the t5 rather than going into the tank? Can you recommend any good actinic setup? What wattage t5's should I use for a tank this tall?
 
Could you post pictures of the stand construction? Like the corners, front, back, etc?

Also take a long (at least 4ft) level with you next time and see how level that stand is. It needs to be near perfect.

Here are all of the pics I have of the stand and the tank wall so far. I'll be taking more. If there are any other shots that you want (by you, I mean anyone) that would help determine if it's build correctly, please let me know. I'll get a long level and go take some readings. Where should I be checking? Level side to side, and front to back. How about level diagonal across the corners? One thing I'm worried about would be whether or not the stand will be able to allow the overflow plumbing.

I've found this ballast. It claims that it's better than a standard electronic ballast. I wouldn't use the overdrive feature (super lumens setting). What are your thoughts on this over an electronic ballast? I know the electronic (hqi) was recommended with 400w radiums.

You are definitely going to have problems with the overflows. Corner overflows will be really bad rear megaflows will be hard too. They should not have doubled the lumber on the top frame. You are going to have to place the tank, trace around the overflow holes and use a hole saw to open them up. You'll need to use a chisel to get the wood out since it is deeper then the whole saw. It also looks like the only support for the front edge is the plywood.

That is a long span (84") to have no supports under anything but the corners. At the minimum I would have used 2x8 construction for the entire top frame and put another vertical support inward about 30" from each corner. I am sure they will tell you this is strong enough but there are big differences between a momentary load and years with 2500 lbs of weight in the same spot. Also you do not need that amount of front to back bracing - all it serves is to keep the frame together and this many are going to get in the way of plumbing big time. It would have been better for you to get the tank and stick it in the room for reference when they built the stand. I would not be happy at this design.

Also with these pictures, it is hard to determine if the top frame is supported to the floor with wood or if they are supporting it with the shear strength of the screws holding it together. The latter is a very bad design and not proper aquarium stand building technique.

As far as electric, are both of those outlets 20 amp on their own circuit? Needless to say, they are required by code to be GFI outlets in case they are unaware of this.

Also make sure they do not put any trim pieces on until the tank is in place so that it is framed properly. Again, having the tank on site would be a big help.
 
Well crap. You make some good points. Do you mind if I send your post to the engineering company that's building out the stand and office area? Also, I've made multiple mentions to them about the corner overflows, gave them pictures of tanks with overflows, and even "drew" out a very basic layout in paint and sent it to them. Also, they were very intentional in not wanting the tank onsite until the office area is complete. I (with the direction of my CEO) was ready to order the tank almost 3 weeks ago, but they (construction company) shut me down.

Thanks for the info on the stand. This engineering company is supposed to be the best in the immediate area, and I feel like I'm doing the engineering research for them! It's saturday, so I don't know if I'll get a reply from them. Honestly, they don't communicate very well in the first place. It takes a week or two to get any sort of reply usually.

Back to lighting (so I can get that checked off the list), would three of these be good/enough?

Those look nice. How well would they do with a tank that's 30" tall? I want to be able to grow anything. Would this light be bright enough for coral at the bottom of the tank?
 
I think if you go with 400w MH, you are going to see heat issues. IT and heat don't mix, so I'd still say go with LEDs. Even if you have to settle for now and go with a few reefbreeders - I think it'll benefit the system as a whole with no temp issues. More heat means more evaporation means more water near computers. Not a good mix normally.

If you do decide to go with MH, you might have an HVAC guy come in and determine if the system can handle the increased heat. With the amount of equipment I see normally in IT departments, you are possibly already straining the AC to keep up in that area.

Just food for thought.
 
Will LED's (I assume you're still talking about the xr30w pro) get the same color and pop from coral that I'm reading that 400w radiums will get? Will the LED's penetrate all the way down to the bottom of the tank?

Well, we've got a server room built out that has it's own 3-ton heating/cooling unit. It won't be connected to the main buildings climate control. All of our servers will be away from the moisture/heat. The building we're moving into will have a 150,000 square foot warehouse, lots of office space, and 6 or 7 retail fronts, all controlled by the same AC system. The office area has a 10' drop ceiling, but all the walls that separate units (IT, marketing, CS, etc) are only 8'. There will be 2' difference, so any heat or humidity that builds up above the tank will be able to dissipate into the rest of the office/warehouse area.

Would 250W halides work for this size tank? I love the idea of those LED systems, I just don't know if I can swing the price. He doesn't want a hole in the wall just sitting there. I don't want to spend money on some lighting, only to have to replace it shortly in the future (ex: t5 or something now, then halide or led later).

With halide, more heat, much more energy usage, expensive bulb replacement. leds are more expensive out the door, but less heat, power draw, bulb replacement. What else could I use as a leverage point to get him to see the advantage? That is, if they will give me the coloration and growing ability that I want.
 
Nothing out there beats the crisp natural look of the almighty metalhalide. I've ran T5's and LED's and IMO they don't compare to MH's. If this was my project I'd slap 3 250w 20k radiums on that thing and feel good about it.
 
Which oneone would you pick? Are you talking about units like aquaticlife that have halide t5 combo? Or more like a diy... Picking everything out.

you can go with a T5/MH fixture definitely, or you can go with 3 LumenBright reflectors and a couple of custom T5's. Either way you'd have a nice look.
