Eshopps Eclipse S, a little loud, any suggestions?

I have a gate valve, but the noise of the outer box or the plumbing isn't the issue. Water flowing into the inner box is pretty loud and seems particularly more loud due to powerhead creating uneven flow through the teeth.

Any suggestions on quieting it down a bit?

You'll have to raise your emergency drain, and make the water level in your outside box higher than the top opening of the nut connecting the two. This'll make it dead silent. I battled with this as well, and ended up pulling the tubing that comes with it for the emergency drain and replacing it with a piece of red PVC tubing that was slightly longer. I'll try to snap some pictures when I get home from work this afternoon. Basically whats happening is the water level in the outside box will match the inside box, and the water level is to low so the water has to fall more. If you raise the water level it doesn't have as long to travel and therefore isn't as loud.

I just pulled up the red pipe a little from being pushed all the way down into the emergency drain bullkhead, and it's already much more quiet.

I'm wondering If I should just go ahead and replace it with and even longer pipe than the red pipe that comes with it?

As with any adjustments, close your gate valve just to make sure that the emergency drain can handle it without overflowing outside the box. But if you're able to quiet it down without replacing the pipe I say go for it. Mine accidentally got glued into place when I glued in the bottom piping, so I had to replace mine.

I have a similar issue with my L. Have been working on tweaking it. Sounds like all the noise is coming from the internal box and not the external. It's almost like there is a bit of a suction sound going through the teeth

That's about the same sound I was getting. I lifted up the red tube as high as possible to where the water level of the bulkhead opening between the boxes was completely submerged, per crab-mcjones advice, and it's like 80 % quieter, worked great

Nice to know. I have plenty of leftover red 1" pvc from my build. I did try that once but when raising the level higher my full siphon want to drain down faster. Still have some tweaking to do. Added a durso vent to my open channel as well to help.

I am running pretty high surface aggitation and that seems to increase the sound also.

I had the same problem, but was able to get mine adjusted using my inline drain valve. Once the water level raised so that there was no waterfall drop from the tank to the overflow box it went almost silent. The noise I have now is from my wave maker. I could lower it but I like having the surface agitation so i'll live with that

Good to know. Just gotta keep tweaking in. Makes it tougher using a ball valve but in my business gate valves are a big no no so went with the ball . In hind sight should have just gone with a gate

I just need to raise my e drain and open channel then I should be good. Just some trial and error work

I did the same thing the first time around. The ball valves work, but you have to mess with them quite a bit before you find the happy spot. After I changed out my sump and redid the plumbing I went with a gate valve and I'm so much happier that I did

Suppose they do still have a purpose. I have learned to hate them lol.

If you extend the height if the emergency too much, should the primary get fully blocked, there may not be enough head pressure above the emergency for it to handle all the flow. With the smaller boxes, and a 1" emergency, flow is probably not high enough for it to be a problem. With larger boxes/flow it can be an issue with dual drains.

Definitely I run the valve closed scenario every time I make an adjustment.

I think with my size pump it's no issue. My e drain handles the flow without problem and the open channel usually takes over anyway

That is the one thing I like about a ball valve is that I can mark it once it's adjusted

I have been messing with this same problem for several months. If I have the emergency drain so high in tank, it seems to stop the waterfall sound. However, water is rather high to the box and I’m nervous of an overflow with additional waves. Seems the eclipse box could have been better designed to have more surface area of the intake to allow more water with less velocity.
I’ve also heard of people putting a sponge in the gap where the water falls down, this can be a disaster if the sponge gets clogged up.

I doubt the box will overflow. Do you have a gate valve to better control flow? Can you adjust your return flow?

Is it waterfall sound from water dropping into the box or is it water through the teeth. With my L the noise I got is the water through the teeth. I have my overflow at back left corner. Initially had single return at back right corner. I recently ran my return up thr center and split with a wye. That significantly quieted the water sound through the teeth not having the flow directly at it

The top of your E drain should essentially be right at your desired water level and you adjust the gate valve on your main drain so there is just a slight trickle down that E drain. If water were to rise that E drain should be able to prevent an overflow

What size tank, pump and plumbing again?
