So I know there is a love hate relationship with this item. I like it but have one perplexing head scratcher. Mine came with a tiny piece of foam on the inside of the intake side of the pump. I like the concept of this. My tank is very clean probably too clean. However it takes very little to clog this foam and before a week it has impacted the skimmers performance. It helps keep motor clean but I'm thinking about tossing it. But... You can clean the whole skimmer in 5 minutes. Anyone toss the foam out?

What about replacing the foam with another piece of foam that has larger pores so it doesn't clog as quickly?

That was a thought too. You would think they put it in there for a reason. I can't imagine if your tank was actually dirty lol. Im leaning towards pitching it. I know there has to be some users on here. Was hoping they would chime in. Thanks Peace River.

Just curious if you ever did end up ditching the foam filter pad? It’s pretty course already, but I just cleaned my skimmer last week and it’s already clogged up. The foam isn’t even reaching the bottom of the neck. This skimmer works great when it’s clean.
I usually am able to get a month between cleaning, however, I just treated for Dino’s and I believe that’s why it’s clogged. However, I have filter floss “in front” of that chamber and still only a week….

I can’t imagine it’s protecting the pump from anything. I imagine any detritus would be chewed up and spit out in the skimmate so I’m not really sure of the purpose but I don’t want to burn up my pump either.
