Eshopps PF-300 HOB OVERFLOW Draining slow

Hey guys I need a little help figuring this out. I have a 40 breeder with a
Eshopps
PF-300 HOB OVERFLOW for drainage and a mag 7 for return. Sometimes everything runs fine, other times the drain is noisy. I have tried sticking airline tube of varying diameters down the drain with some success but the bigger problem I’ve been having lately is the drain isn’t draining fast enough to keep up with the return. I’ve tried dialing the pump back but then the water level drops to much. I can’t understand why it runs perfectly fine for weeks then suddenly has issues. I thought about cutting a tee just below the overflow box running a small piece of pipe then a 90 and a length of pipe to just above the box and try and vent it like a home sewage line. I’m stuck, any help is greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by “dialing my pump back drops my water level”? If you are trying to raise the water level in your tank by increasing flow from pump that’s not the way to do it, raising or lowering the overflow box sets water level in tank.

Danner pumps can handle a good deal of head pressure. You can add a gate valve above the mag 7, to reduce the return speed. Dont use a ball valve, will take forever to find the right

do not lower enough not to let air get into the siphon, this will eventually cause the siphon to fail.

Some other points..

the PF 300 is only rated at 300 gph, not sure how much your pushing the mag 7 or what your head pressure is but you may be over driving the overflow.

these type of overflows are intended to be used with flexible drain line which would give much better flow rates over the hard PVC.

the pvc pipe that the prefilter slides over should already have a silencer installed?

making a lid for the backside box of the overflow will dramatically reduce noise.

Thanks. It did have a silencer built in but it broke off when I was cleaning the sponge. I’ll try using flex tubing and if that fails I guess I’ll have to buy a new overflow

Take the sponge out of the back and yes they are noisy till dirty, use bubble wrap and a stiff sponge to fill the opening and reduce noise
