Essential items

Hey guys, beginner reefer here‍ I was wondering what are the essential stuff I need to keep a mixed feed tank? My tank is currently cycling. Want to be prepared before I start adding fish and corals.

On a serious note, you will get a lot of conflicting answers on the "needs" of reefing equipment. One thing I will add and stress is that time and time again it has been proven, do not go cheap. A lot of more expensive items do have their place and value. Going cheap with some stuff costs you more in the end.

Depends on the temperature of your home and If it gets really hot or really cold. let’s say it gets hot and cold.

-Chiller
-Heater
-Light
-Wave Makers
-Filters floss/Socks
-Charcoal
-Return Pump

This is what I would think is just the basic essential items.

What about the corals needs though? I’m aware I need food for it but what else?

Absolutely need:

• Good lighting
• Good flow
• Religious maintenance schedule
• Good heater
• GOOD test kits for water parameters (Kh, Ca, Mg, Salinity, NO3, PO4 etc.)

Not absolutely needed but should have:

• Skimmer
• Doser (dosing by hand gets old)
• ATO

Oh I thought we were just talking equipment. The needs is dependent of your situation, and issues that arise. But let’s say everything goes perfect.

-10% Water change every week.
-Filter floss / sock replacement every 2-3 days.
-Make sure tank is always getting topped off in a timely manner.
-Enough rock to house adequate bacteria.
-and to say it simply, keep all parameters stable and in their ideal rang for the coral you have.
