I was wondering if anyone knows if an oil diffuser a room over could cause issues for a reef tank. I don't want to tell my wife she can't use her new present but I really don't want to lose my reef either. Any one familiar with potential issues?

The debate begins in 3-2-1

I wouldn't use one in the room with them. In another room maybe, but not near the tank.

I burn candles in the same room as mine all the time with absolutely no affect. The oils are "all natural" though and the candles are made by someone I know.

Thank you for your thoughts. I was thinking a room away may be fine but wanted to research it some before risking it.

It really depends on the ingredients

I use these 10' away from my tank for years and never had a problem. I only use it a few times a month.

From my reading, the only air freshener suspect is the plug in cartridges. I have burned scented candles and wax melters in the same room with my tanks for years.

With the diffuser you add distilled water and 4-6 drops of the oil you want to use. It reminds me of a humidifier.
There are a ton of oils all with different characteristics.

I've used my diffuser about 10 feet away from my rimless and in the same room as 2 other freshwater tanks with no ill effects. Just be sure to wash hands well before putting in the tank if you apply oils topically.

My wife uses essential oils diffusers all over the house. Granted I've never had one running in the same room as my tank, but still no issues to report.

I've had one set up 5 feet from my tank for well over a year no, no issues.

I personally wouldn't risk it but then I wouldn't use one period so I'm not exactly unbiased either. Best I can say is try it and see.

My wife sells Scentsy and has both the oil defusers and wax warmers all through our house (I think she has a bigger addiction to those than I do with reefing haha) I haven't had any problems with any of my tanks. As said before, the only ones you need to worry about are the ones that spray the scent into the air.

I use one 3' from my tank plus a sesame oil lamp every morning. no ill effect I noticed. i only use the essential oils a few times a week tho. I seriously doubt they will harm the tank. but like said above wash hand well even if just touching the bottle before hand/arms in the tank.

IMHO there will lots of things to talk to the wifie and tell her she cant do around the reef this might not be one. gotta pick your battles better to keep her happy that the room does not smell like fish tank then be in the dog house...

I actually use essential oils all of the time and have never had anything bad happen. I have my 180G in my bedroom and run a diffuser right next to it and haven't had anything happen.. If you burn candles in the same room and don't have any effects with all the chemicals in there then I doubt something all natural would have any harmful effects.

However I do know that Clove oil is used to euthanize fish when you put it directly in the water so that is the one oil I do avoid diffusing in the room but who knows if it would actually have an effect, I just don't want to take any chances

On a related subject, what about incense/burning herbs? My tank is currently in the same room I would be using the incense. I have only burned a little sage since setting up the tank, and that's been fine so far.

Cheers,

I live with roommates who are smokers and my tank is in the main living area. They smoke their vaporizer pens, (other stuff), burn incense, herbs, candles, etc around the room. I try to tell everyone not burn stuff around the tank but it clearly does not always sink in (plus we have a small house). The fog/haze of the smoke sometimes really lingers around the tank and lights giving me worries. I have a mixed reef with quite a few sensitive organisms/corals. No problems at all so far though so I imagine it is fine.
