Hey everyone,
Does anyone know any reputable/ethical stores to buy from? I go LFS but recently I've noticed they are keeping things in tanks with nothing, not even a rock or sand. I'm new to this and am trying to do it as best I can. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I buy only aqua cultured fishes and corals and they are bred or grown in spartan vats/ tanks. Happy enough to breed and thrive. I know bare tanks are easier to take care of and a clean home is better for the fishes well being than a decorated dirty home.

All my fish have adapted to a more natural home with out a hiccup. Biota, ORA and Sustainable Aquatics all do a great job and can be purchased online or from a LFS. I suggest getting them drop shipped direct to you. Have fun and nice to see someone else is concerned about the business practices in our hobby.

My lfs keeps certain tanks with nothing and those fish are still healthy what is wrong with it if they only put the top sellers in there and the fish are mostly in and out.

Coolio, thank you! If I order online I'm worried they will be dead on arrival...what's your experience with that? I've gotten different information from different people...thank you

Here's my experience since you asked:
Don't order when it's beastly hot or cold.
Have your pets held at FedEx or UPS for pick up if you can.
Be there for delivery if you have to have them delivered.
The supplier packs them in bags with pure oxygen above the water- inside a bag- inside a foam insulated box- inside a corrugated box...with heat or cold packs as required.
I have had DOA. Sad, but you know there is death in every population. Fishes in the ocean die by the thousands...
I think the DOA risk of shipping aqua cultured pets is more than offset by the multitude of deaths that occur in the wild collection, shipment, wholesale and final shipment of wild caught fishes that we don't see.

There are many not so great to just plain bad online places.
Aptasia and Ich are not in every facilities system, they don't need to be in yours.
I order only from the ones I mentioned because I know they are good and have everything I want. I'm sure there are others.

To be honest, there’s nothing ethical about fish stores or online venders. Most of the fish they get will die. Most of the fish customers buy will die. Most of the fish shipped will die. As for empty tanks, thats perfectly fine. It’s a much more sterile place and is better for the fish. I don’t believe in buying only aquacultured? Seriously? Lol they all came from the ocean at some point. All of the corals came from the same place.
