Euphyllia discussion.

Hi R2R. I'm currently involved in a discussion in a local group about euphyllia and would love to hear your input! I'm under the impression some euphyllia species can touch each other long term without issues, another person is adamant no euphyllia, even of the same species can't touch without some sort of warfare even if it takes quite a while for it to begin. Over the years I've heard people repeat both sides of the discussion as fact.
But that got me thinking, why are there only 6 main euphyllia sold in the hobby? The wall varieties, divisa, ancora and glabrescens and the branching varieties paradivisa, parancora and paraglabrescens.
I've never seen cristata, baliensis or the others advertised for sale. Ever. Not in my 7, 8 or 9 or however many years it's been since I started the hobby. I'm not saying those species aren't sold, but they're never advertised as that.
Are the others just not often collected enough to be commonly sold, or are the other 6 so common that the other species are just labeled one of those names?
I have a feeling a lot of euphyllia species may be mislabeled. Some of them look similar enough to pass off as hammers or torches.

I don't think this makes sense. My medication is kicking in, so please forgive me if this is just a nonsensical load of poop haha.

But I guess what I'm trying to discuss is, mislabeled euphyllia, true or false? [emoji12]

As far as I know, same species, but different color can touch.
Torch is by far most aggressive and should be held at distance.

And do believe a lot of Euphyllia is sold while mislabelled. So that statement is true.

I have seen euphyllia cristata labled and sold as grape coral as well as flat tentacle torch corals.

Personally I have never had any issues , any euphyllia can survive next to any other euphyllia ( it doesn't matter on species/colour etc ) except torch , these seem to kill other euphyllia they touch, that's why I don't keep any.
Yes they are quite often mis-labelled during the selling process

No ill effects thus far, I'll keep you posted!

On to the mislabeled ones, I'm not familiar enough with the obscure ones to add anything, but I am very interested. I'd love to see pictures of "oddball" species if anyone has them!

You guys seem to share the same ideas I do regarding aggression between species for the most part.
I guess every individual coral is different, so have any of you had bad experiences with euphyllia touching? Who beat who?

While I havnt had any issues personally, torches tend to be victorious in warfare as they pack a pretty strong punch.

In my tank I have 2 frogspawn abd 2 hammer and all 4 touch each other and they all seem very happy to me always puffed up. I do have 2 torchs as well but there on the other side of the tank because I have read they will kill other corals they touch with there sting. I have had no problems with the 2 torchs touching each other to.

You really shouldn't have to worry about 2 hammers being near each other.

Now that would be cool to see! I get tons of growth and color but only my Zoa's have spread never heard of a torch showing up after months of being dead. That is my favorite coral and I have 3 different torches. Would love to have one pop up like you did!

I have all three. First one was sold as hammer / frogspawn hybrid, second as frogspawn, third as branching hammer.

My aussie torch was stung by my 3 indo torches they don't like each other.

The 3 on the left don't seem to bother each other. The torch isn't close to anything.

Perfect topic for me to post this in. Any ideas as to what this may be? Torch or hammer or hybrid? Some heads like a hammer, but long tentacles like a torch.

IMO I would say that's a hammer but I'm not an expert.

Guess i better do more research. I have 2 frogspawns and a torch that sit in beyween the frogspawns. Been there for months. The clowns like to host and play in the epbyllias. My frogspawn did kill a birdsnestthat was to close
